The impact of long-term application of inorganic nitrogen fertilizers and manure on changes of selected properties of organic matter in sandy loam soil

Abstract: The aim of the research was to assess the effect of long-term application of different doses of nitrogen fertilizers with or without manure to changes in the total organic carbon content, total nitrogen content, evaluation of dissolved organic carbon content and the value of absorbance coefficient (A 4/6 ) in sandy loam soil. The base of research was the long-term field experiment, established in 1979 at the Wierzchucinek Experimental Station close to Bydgoszcz city -Poland. The experiment was carried out in t… Show more

“…It is commonly known that long-term use of manure increases the content of various components in the soil (e.g. soil organic carbon (SOC), TN, as well as macronutrients and micronutrients) (Wang et al, 2009;Li et al, 2010;Kołodziejczyk et al, 2017;Murawska et al, 2017). Besides, the application of completely NPK mineral fertilizers for a long time also increases the SOM (Mercik et al, 2005).…”

“…The use of fertilizers can increase plant and root biomass, eventually leading to an increase in soil organic matter (SOM) (Tian et al, 2015). Murawska et al (2017) showed that after 36 years of applying NPK fertilizer to sandy-loamy soil with or without manure, the SOM content increased, and the humus quality in the soil also improved. The use of certain fertilizers (e.g.…”

“…In addition to the increase in yields, the use of fertilisers in the soil can increase the biomass of plants and roots, eventually resulting in SOM increase (Tian et al 2015). Murawska et al (2017) have shown that after 36 years of fertilising the sandy soil by NPK without or with farmyard manure, the content of SOM increased, and at the same time the quality of humus improved in this soil. Higher content of SOM and humus quality are considered to be major factors influencing soil sorption complex.…”
