Total phenols, flavonoids, minerals and amino acids content were investigated in leaves of four fern species grown under four shading treatments with different sunlight transmittance in 35% full sunlight (FS), 13% FS, 8% FS and 4% FS. The leaves of four fern species contain high levels of total phenols and flavonoids, abundant minerals and amino acids, and these all were strongly affected by transmittance. Total phenols and flavonoids content were significantly positively correlated with transmittance, while minerals and total amino acids content were significantly negatively correlated with transmittance, a finding that supports research into how higher light intensity can stimulate the synthesis of phenols and flavonoids, and proper shading can stimulate the accumulation of minerals and amino acids. Matteuccia struthiopteris (L.) Todaro (MS) had the highest total phenols content, Athyrium multidentatum (Doll.) Ching (AM) showed the highest total amino acids, total essential amino acids content, Osmunda cinnamomea (L) var. asiatica Fernald (OCA) exhibited the highest total non-essential amino acids and flavonoids content. Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn var. latiusculum (Desy.) Underw. ex Heller (PAL) exhibited the highest minerals content. This research can provide a scientific basis for the cultivation and management of those four fern species.

Egyptian Journal of Botany http://ejbo.journals.ekb.eg/ Review 45 A LFALFA is considered as "the Queen of the Forages" due to its high protein content and nutritional value. The production of alfalfa under different stressful environments is a great challenge, representing a serious threat to global food security. To improve the production of alfalfa under stressful conditions, there is a crucial need to understand the response of alfalfa plants to stresses, the mechanisms of tolerance and the management options. Alfalfa is a promising biorefinery crop from which leaf protein concentrates as well as bio-organic fertilizers can be produced. The potential of leaf-derived protein concentrate for human and animal nutrition is huge, yet unexploited. The bio-organic fertilizers derived from alfalfa plants represent a sustainable way to supply the plant with some nutrients. This review article highlights the sustainable use of alfalfa in biorefinery and bio-organic fertilizer production. Moreover, scattered knowledge about its use for production is collected supporting its suitability for improving soil fertility. Last, we discuss the suitability of alfalfa to produce stable yields in the light of changing climate and stressful conditions like salinity.

In stored freeze-dried orange carrots, carotenoids are not stable compounds. The aim of the work was to evaluate the stability of carotenoids in products obtained from polyphenol-rich purple carrots which additionally contain anthocyanins.Material and methods. This study compares the effect of air-drying and freeze-drying as well as 6-month storage on the content of carotenoids, anthocyanins and total phenolics in dried products obtained from purple carrot.Results. The phenolic compounds found in the greatest amounts in carrot were ferulic acid cyanidin 3-xylosylglucosylgalactoside, p-coumaric acid cyanidin 3-xylosylglucosylgalactoside, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic-quinic acid. Freeze-drying did not significantly reduce levels of carotenoids and anthocyanin content, while air-drying led to substantial losses of carotenoids, anthocyanins and polyphenols. 6-month storage of freeze-dried products caused losses of carotenoids, anthocyanins and total polyphenols of 42%, 33% and 53% respectively when compared with the raw material. In air-dried products, the losses were 66%, 33% and 36%, respectively. Conclusion.The results indicate that the combined effect of freeze-drying and 6-month storage was reduced losses of carotenoids compared to traditionally dried products.
