The impact of ISO 9000 and TQM on best practice/performance

Abstract: Companies, irrespective of size or sector, often use ISO 9000 and TQM as a route to world class status. The aim of this paper is to show if this has had any impact on or contributed to raising their competitiveness. This paper gives brief details of a large‐scale UK benchmarking study on the adoption of best practice which provides the data for this research. Then the distinguishing features of some best practices and performance within both ISO and non‐ISO companies are presented for the manufacturing sector.… Show more

“…Eskildsen & Kanji conducted a study that found that poor management of people and processes is reflected in two of the results criteria (Eskildsen, 1998). Prahbu et al demonstrated strong associations between the enabler criterion Human Resources and the result criterion Professionals; between the enabler criterion Leadership and the result criterion Customers through the assurance of good training for employees; and between people-related issues and operational outcomes measures (Prabhu et al, 2000). Eskildsen & Dahlgaard showed that the enabler criteria Human Resources and Process Control are positively associated with the result criterion Professionals (Eskildsen and Dahlgaard, 2000).…”

“…The implementation of quality practices in concert with one another is necessary in order to realize the full benefits of TQM (Tamimi, 1998). Some empirical work supports the existence of interrelationships between the enabler side of the EFQM Excellence Model (Dijkstra, 1997; Eskildsen, 1998; Eskildsen and Dahlgaard, 2000; Prabhu et al, 2000; Reiner, 2002; Bou‐Llusar et al, 2005), based on the assumption that these criteria are components of the unique TQM philosophy. As Eskildsen et al (2000) suggest, previous research on the causal structure of the EFQM Excellence Model has shown that the enabler criteria are linked together in a very complex structure, making it very difficult to discern between them.…”

“…It is good for an organisation to have a quality system such as ISO 9000 and use this as a stepping stone for QS 9000 and TQM respectively (Ho, 1994). Moreover, a recent study has shown that companies that systematically adopt best practice starting with ISO 9000 and moving towards a TQM culture achieve significantly higher performance levels (Prabhu, et al, 2000). This claim can be further reinforced by means of another study performed by Hongyi based on the survey of 316 private companies.…”
