Innovation and internationalization are important strategic choices for SMEs. Previous studies have explored the relationship between them based on different theories. Innovation and internationalization have different mutual relationships in different regions and industries. In developed countries, innovation and internationalization are the "old topics" in academic research field. Whether internationalization has an impact on innovation remains questionable. In emerging markets, the relationship between innovation and internationalization presents different characteristics. The shortage of resources makes it hard to adopt both innovation and internationalization strategies. Combing the existing literature, this paper classifies the theoretical basis and research level of the literature, systematically analyzes the interaction of innovation and internationalization, and summarizes the existing research framework. Based on this, the future research directions in this field are pointed out.

Motivasi kajian ini adalah tertumpu kepada konsep 'kesan tarikan ICT' dan 'kesan tolakan PLA' dalam mempengaruhi inovasi. Kajian ini menghipotesiskan pengaruh pengantarabangsaan ke atas inovasi mungkin berbeza mengikut tahap kemampuan menyerap negara Muslim. Istilah pengantarabangsaan sering dikaitkan dengan import, eksport dan pelaburan langsung asing (PLA). Manakala keupayaan menyerap merupakan keupayaan sesebuah negara untuk mengenalpasti, memahami dan mengkomersialkan pengetahuan. Dengan kata lain, negara yang mempunyai tahap pengantarabangsaan yang besar tetapi dengan tahap kemampuan menyerap yang rendah mungkin menjejaskan aktiviti inovasi. Justeru itu, objektif kajian ini adalah untuk mengkaji sama ada kemampuan menyerap dan pengantarabangsaan meningkatkan pembangunan aktiviti inovasi di negara Muslim. Model bilangan iaitu model Poisson dan model binomial negatif akan digunakan untuk menganggar data keratan rentas dari tahun 2000 hingga 2016. Hasil kajian menunjukkan impak positif pengantarabangsaan terhadap inovasi adalah bergantung kepada kemampuan menyerap, iaitu pembangunan ICT. Oleh itu, ini menyarankan bahawa dasar yang digubal untuk meningkatkan pengantarabangsaan perlu disusuli dengan komitmen yang berterusan dalam pertumbuhan kemampuan menyerap bagi merangsang proses inovasi di negara Muslim.

With the increasing attention given to resource scarcity and environmental destruction, growing pressure is imposed upon MNEs (multinational enterprises) by a wide range of stakeholders to exert green innovation. Although an emerging body of research has explored the contributing factors of green innovation, little attention has been paid to the impact of internationalization, especially the different dimensions of internationalization, on green innovation performance. To address this research gap, this research aims to examine the role of both the breadth (geographical range) and depth (intensity) of internationalization on green innovation performance of MNEs, and investigate the moderating roles of MNEs' global dynamic management capability and absorptive capacity. Based on organizational learning theory, this study used secondary data from Chinese listed companies and established econometric models to test the proposed research framework. The results indicated that the breadth of internationalization could enhance MNEs' green innovation performance. Alternatively, the depth of internationalization could inhibit green innovation performance. In addition, the results also revealed that global dynamic managerial and absorptive capacities can both enhance the positive effect between internationalization breadth and green innovation performance while weakening the negative effect of internationalization depth on green innovation performance. This study has implications for strengthening our knowledge of green innovation performance as well as enhancing policy design for sustainable development.
