The impact of incorporating nurse-specific characteristics in a cyclical scheduling approach

Abstract: Nursing staff in various hospitals in Belgium are principally cyclically scheduled. The employed cyclic schedules embody, however, only a weak reflection of the ultimate nurse rosters constructed for a specific month. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of integrating nurse-specific characteristics in the cyclic scheduling approach. Moreover, we analyse to what extent these characteristics should be incorporated and compare this approach with a general and more robust cyclical scheduling approach and th… Show more

“…These constraints are often dictated by internal company policies, which renders them useable to start a real-life discussion from different angles. The nursescheduling problem case at the University Hospital, Ghent, Belgium (Maenhout and Vanhoucke 2008b) and the crew-scheduling case at Brussels Airlines, Brussels, Belgium (Maenhout and Vanhoucke 2008a) are used as illustrative material and are easily understood by people because they tackle problems with which they are familiar.…”

“…In most studies on scheduling problems in healthcare systems including those of Jaumard et al (1998), Aickelin and White (2004), Parr and Thompson (2007), Goodman et al (2009), Tsai and Li (2009), Maenhout and Vanhoucke (2009), Burke et al (2010) and Maenhout and Vanhoucke (2010), researchers do not deal with the problems in HHSs, but they are only interested in nurse scheduling problems of finding optimal shifts of nurses in hospitals. Also, in most studies on HHSs, such as those of Shaughnessy and Kramer (1990), Shaughnessy et al (1994), Kendra et al (2007), and Dansky and Dirani (2008), they discuss/analyse the current status of the systems and (future) demand for the home healthcare services, and/or report how the systems are being operated, without dealing with operational problems of the systems.…”
