Smallholder dairy farmers have the challenges of accessing timely and reliable agricultural information, and this limits them from realizing maximum farm output. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a farming extension tool by smallholder farmers has the potential to reverse the scenario and improve farmers’ outputs and incomes leading to increased welfare. This study employed the Propensity score Matching approach to evaluate the impacts of ICT-based extension services, in this case, iCow services on milk production, milk income, and household income using cross-sectional data from a survey of dairy farmers in Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua and Bomet counties of Kenya. The use of ICT-based iCow services is shown to increase Annual milk production per cow, milk income, and household income by 13%, 29%, and 22%, respectively. Partnerships between network providers and research institutes should be encouraged as part of bridging the extension gap occasioned by reduced public expenditure on extension services.

Agriculture is the oldest profession in the world. Since the historic human civilization periods, it has gradually developed. Technologies have enriched this occupation with the pace of time. Modern agriculture nowadays is so much dependent on ICT. A thorough review of secondary data sources; i.e. overlook of literatures from web, online published articles, reports, news etc. on some selective districts of Bangladesh was made to study the current features of ICT, its exercise and future prospects in the context of agriculture information and communication. Findings revealed that the majority of the farming group and thereby involved extension workers (SAAO) have limited access, usage, knowledge and capacity on the use of ICT tools and media. Farmers mostly use AICCs (Agriculture Information and Communication Centre), non-smart cell phones, TV and radio for agricultural communication. Conversely, SAAOs (Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer) used mobile phones, demonstrations and consulted AEO (Agriculture Extension Officer) for information and communications. Their utilization level of ICT based service was found much lower. Solutions to address these problems were found to be IT-based trainings, easy access and availability of ICT tools and services at a convenient price. Being an agrarian country; there’s a huge opportunity for improvement of ICTs in the agricultural sectors. These include, dedicated bandwidth of internet, electricity, reducing internet data charges, establishment of a data center, agriculture database, encyclopedia, GIS, RS, GPS, radio-based technologies, online-based agricultural (seed, fertilizer, pesticide, irrigation, marketing linkage etc.) management systems, IoT, drone, artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, machine learning, big data analytics etc. Incorporation of these high techs are now a burning issue for the future development of agriculture and sustain production in a rapid changing world.

I n Pakistan, many farmers are illiterate, socially excluded and unaware of the latest developments in the agricultural sector. It is not that they are resistant to technology; the fact is that new technologies and necessary support systems were rarely provided to them. Their poverty has led them to various forms of Abstract | Through the utilization of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) tools, farmers can get timely, up-to-date, relevant, accurate technical information and advice and extension agents can effectively answer farmers' abundant information needs. Thus, the present study was conducted to investigate the usage of ICT tools in agricultural extension services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. For the study three districts (i.e. Swat, Haripur and Mardan) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were chosen and a total sample size of 400 respondents was selected. Data were collected through pre-tested and validated interview schedule and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of the study showed that the maximum of the respondents (34.5%) were in the age category of 36 to 45 years whereas, 25.8% of the respondents were illiterate. About 64.5% of the sampled respondents were owner cultivators and almost 40% of the sampled respondents have farming experience of 21 to 30 years. More than half of the respondents (55%) owned mobile, 22.5% of the respondents owned telephone, 52.8% of the respondents owned television and 9.8% of the sampled respondents owned radio in the study area. About, 49.8% respondents were uncertain about the favorable effects of ICTs on production while 14.2% of the respondents agreed about favorable effects of ICTs on production. Krushkal Wallis analysis showed that there was highly significant difference in respondents' perception about the effect of mobile, telephone, television and radio on production. The study suggested that extension agents are required to create awareness of the use of ICTs among the farming communities. Department of agriculture extension needs to establish an ICT based program so that innovative agricultural information might be communicated to the farming community.
