“…Thus, our study provides evidence that hospice substitutes for more expensive procedures often utilized at end of life. Our results are consistent with a prior study that found a lower likelihood of starting a new chemotherapy agent in the last 30 days of life among patients with lung cancer who used hospice, 15 but to our knowledge, ours is the first study to also demonstrate a reduction in radiation therapy sessions among hospice users. An important finding from our subgroup analysis is the role of length of hospice enrollment on cost savings.…”

“…Some studies have found lower hospitalizations 9,15 and emergency department (ED) 9,15 and intensive care unit 9,15 visits as likely contributors to cost savings. However, chemotherapy 15 and radiation therapy sessions, which contribute significantly toward end-of-life costs among patients with cancer, have been often overlooked. In fact, chemotherapy and radiation therapy sessions make larger contributions to end-of-life outpatient service costs among patients with cancer than ED visits.…”

“…Residents in Census tracts with a high percentage of minorities also were less likely to receive hospice care, 82 which could have implications for cancer survival. 83 These reported disparities in care are consistent with our finding that black ethnic density is associated with greater mortality.…”

“…The 6-month, 1-year, and 2-year overall survival rates of the 102 patients with metastatic NSCLC were 17.65%, 3.92%, and 0.98%, respectively. The median overall survival of the 102 patients was 3.15 months ( Figure 2), which was consistent with that in previous studies, which reported a median overall survival of 3-5 months (24)(25)(26). These results provide greatly important basic survival data to researchers evaluating new treatment strategies for patients with recurrent stage III/IV NSCLC who show progression on multiple conventional treatments.…”
