The Impact of Grinding on Surface Integrity of Powder-Metallurgy High-Speed Steel (S390)

Abstract: The paper presents an experimental study on the relationship betweenprocess parametersand surface integrity of powder-metallurgy high-speed steel S390 in ultraprecision grinding. The optimal machining parametershave been obtained based on the Taguchi quality design method. The affected layerinduced by ultraprecision grinding has a uniform white layerand an inconspicuous dark layer; there are some carbides in the white layer of some samples; a compressive residual stress field exists on the ground surface. “…While the PM conventional route (die compaction and sintering) is already extensively studied for cold work tool steels (CWS) 9,10 and high speed tool steels (HSS) [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] , it is rather scarcely used for HWS. At present, there is hardly any literature characterizing HWS using PM methods apart from HIP 20 .…”
