Broilers are fast-growing birds and serve as a means of white meat highly rich in protein with low cholesterol compared with other livestock. Despite this, there is a dearth of information on its profitability in Nigeria. This study, therefore, investigated the profitability of commercial broiler production enterprise and its determinants in Osun state Nigeria. Data were collected from 200 commercial broiler farmers under the Poultry Association of Nigeria and analysed using descriptive statistics, gross margin and multiple regression. The results revealed that the broiler production enterprise had a gross margin of ₦692,961.83 (USD 1,680.15), a net income of ₦568,036.14 (USD 1,377.26), a benefit-cost ratio of 2.53, an operating cost of 0.26 and 1.53 return on capital invested. These show that the broiler production enterprise was profitable. Cost of feed and disease outbreaks were factors that inhibit the profitability of broiler production venture while years of broiler farming experience, flock size, annual income, access to agricultural extension and access to credit were enhancing factors for the profitability of broiler production enterprise. The extremely severe constraints faced in broiler production were disease outbreaks, inadequate capital and the high cost of feeds. These findings call for government and policy intervention to enhance broiler production profitability. This could be achieved through subsidising the cost of feed, provision of vaccines and drugs to prevent and control disease outbreaks and provision of financial support in the form of credit.

Effect of Housing Design and Location on Production and Economic Performance of Broiler Chickens during Summer in Botswana

Botswana experiences long, hot summer periods which negatively affect broiler productivity and results in economic losses. To determine these negative effects, two parallel broiler production studies were conducted in the North eastern (NE) and South eastern (SE) regions. In each region, three large scale commercial broiler farms were randomly selected based on similarities in bird management and housing systems. In each farm, one house type (Gable, Hoop and See-saw) was selected for long term flock monitoring (1 to 35 days) over three production cycles. Results showed that the production performance of the broilers in the SE region was superior to that in the NE region, with temperatures on being average higher in the NE than in the SE. The European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the SE (209) than in the NE (174). In the NE region, the broilers reared in the Hoop structure performed significantly better (p<0.05) than in both the Gable and See-saw structures in regards to feed consumption, average daily gain, and water consumption. In the SE region, only water consumption was significantly higher (p<0.05) in the Gable structure as compared to the other house structures. At the point of slaughter (35 days), there were significant differences (p<0.05) between the bird masses across the different house types. Mortality was not significantly different (p>0.05) between the regions at 9.0% and 7.4% for the NE and SE, respectively. In the NE, the Gable structure had the highest profitability and economic efficiency and was thus superior in comparison to the other house structures.

This research aims to evaluate the immunogenicity of different doses of HIPRAVIAR® BPL2 inactivated Newcastle disease virus (NDV) LaSota vaccine. Specific-pathogen-free day-old chicks were divided into 3 different groups, and each group was vaccinated subcutaneously with the vaccine dose of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.5 ml, respectively. Blood samples were collected to measure NDV-specific antibody titers using a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The HI result showed that birds vaccinated with 0.5 ml HIPRAVIAR® BPL2 vaccine showed an increased statistically significant antibody titer compared to the other doses. Similarly, the ELISA result corroborated the HI finding. No significant difference between the results was detected when the antibody titers were measured using two ELISA kits, Biocheck CK116, and CIVTEST® AVI NDV. The percentage antibody-positive test based on HI amongst the different days post-vaccination showed that all the birds were positive from 28 to 42 days following vaccination with HIPRAVIAR® BPL2 0.5 ml (group D), whereas the highest percentage of antibody positivity were 80% and 70% at 42 days post-vaccination with HIPRAVIAR® BPL2 0.1 ml (group B) and HIPRAVIAR® BPL2 0.2 ml (group C), respectively. In conclusion, besides the difference in seroconversion, all the vaccine doses used had important levels of seroconversion and positivity.
