The impact of food safety events on the value of food-related firms: An event study approach

Abstract: a b s t r a c tFood safety events threaten not only consumers' health, but also the value of associated firms. While previous studies examined the impact of food safety events on consumer demand for products, little attention has been paid to the impact on the market value of firms. Using the event study method (ESM), this study investigated abnormal returns (ARs) and cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) of firms associated with 40 food safety events over the past 25 years in the U.S. The results of this study d… Show more

“…Seo et al (2013) asserted that the impact of product harm is most acute in the first 2 days following the event, but recovery can occur within a year. In other research, after studying the interactions among marketing mix variables, the extent of negative publicity and the acknowledgment of product harm blame, Cleeren et al (2013) concluded that what may be good for the transgressing brand may not be good for the category and vice-versa.…”

“…The economic impacts of food safety recalls have been explored extensively. Studies have examined the impact of food safety recalls on company stock prices (21)(22)(23)(24), retail meat and livestock prices (2,3,(25)(26)(27), and meat demand (4,(28)(29)(30). The impact of recalls is known to have both short-(4) and long-run (31) implications within the species for which the recall occurred and spillover effects into other species.…”

“…Marler Clark attorneys have represented victims of most foodborne illness outbreaks since 1993, when the law firm was established to handle the Jack in the Box case. Marler Clark's archive is considered a reliable source for restaurant-associated foodborne illness outbreaks (Seo et al, 2013). When a lawsuit has been filed following a food crisis, it indicates that the crisis is serious, creating the possibility of a spillover effect on Jack in the Box.…”

“…In responding to other firms' food crises, a firm with a food crisis history may be affected by unrelated crises, that is, by a negative spillover effect. Seo et al (2013) examined the impact of food safety events on firms, asserting that it takes approximately one year to recover from a crisis after an outbreak. Although their study investigated the impact of food crises on firms' financial performance, the findings were limited to short-term impacts.…”
