The Impact of Food Histamine Intake on Asthma Activity: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Asthma is a complex chronic inflammatory disorder. Diet’s impact on asthma symptoms is controversial. The objective of this pilot crossover, randomized, two-period study was to examine the effect of dietary histamine intake on asthma symptoms in twenty-one children with mild intermittent asthma. Children were randomly assigned to either a high- or low-histamine diet, based on the Mediterranean pattern, for 4 weeks. After a 2-week washout period, patients crossed to the alternative diet for 4 additional weeks. … Show more

“…A high intake of seasonal fruits during pregnancy and lactation, both fresh and dried, was associated with a reduced risk of FPIAP. The seasonal availability of a wide variety of Mediterranean fruits rich in antioxidants protects against oxidative exposures, abating allergy risk during pregnancy, lactation ( 12 ) infancy ( 41 ) and childhood ( 42 , 43 ). The high fruit content of soluble dietary fibers enhances the development of a healthy intestinal microbiota ( 23 ), and fruit antioxidants, including polyphenols, carotenoids, and vitamins A and C, are anti-inflammatory ( 44 ).…”

“…[40] Therefore, the effect of diet-derived antioxidants on tumors remains highly controversial, and there is a lack of data from large population samples. Carotene, an important food source of antioxidants, [41] is widely distributed in vegetables and fruits consumed by humans. Carotene can improve cognitive function and cardiovascular health, along with its benefits for eye health.…”

“…Not only genetic factors but also environmental, racial, and ethnic factors are associated with the asthma etiology; also, the dietary factors may have an active and direct impact on asthma symptoms [ 63 65 ]. Asthma can be triggered by exposure to many environmental factors [ 66 ].…”
