The impact of flavonoids-rich Ziziphus jujuba Mill. Extract on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation

Abstract: Background: To evaluate the in vitro antibacterial effect of flavonoids-rich Ziziphus jujuba Mill. extract (FZM) against the formation of bacterial biofilms (BBFs) in Staphylococcus aureus. Results: FZM can effectively inhibit the formation of S. aureus biofilms in vitro. Morphological observation showed a decrease in both biofilm adhesion and thickness. Results of confocal laser scanning microscopy used to detect the thickness of the BBFs showed that FZM treatment reduced the thickness of the BBFs. Furthermor… Show more

“…Therefore, it is very important to investigate antimicrobial agents to treat the infection of S. aureus. Natural extracts from plants have many unique advantages for the treatment of S. aureus biofilm infections 18 . In the study, Polygonum chinense L.aqueous extract was evaluated for its antibacterial and www.nature.com/scientificreports/ anti-biofilm activity.…”

“…Exploring effective dietary sources, such as Ginkgo biloba extract, marigold extract, dried olive pulp, and jujube, could be interesting and rewarding [ 8 , 9 ]. Ziziphus jujuba Mill, a commonly known round and sour fruit, has been used for medicinal purposes for more than 2000 years [ 10 ]. There is general agreement that the antioxidant activities of plants are mostly associated with polysaccharides, polyphenols, and flavonoids with potent radical scavenging capabilities [ 11 ].…”

“…ZSS can exert a neuroprotective effect on rats with p-chlorophenylalanine-induced insomnia via activation of the GABAA receptor (Xiao et al, 2022). ZSS can also inhibit biofilm formation, improve the bacterial pH environment, and eliminate the hydrophobic effect of reactive oxygen species and flavonoids (Miao et al, 2020). In recent years, the increasing economic value of Z. jujuba Mill.…”
