The impact of fiscal decentralization, green energy, and economic policy uncertainty on sustainable environment: a new perspective from ecological footprint in five OECD countries

Abstract: The paper explores the short-run and long-run asymmetric impact of fiscal decentralization, green energy, and economic policy uncertainty on environmental sustainability proxied by ecological footprint. Using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed lag (NARDL) approach in selected five OECD countries, we find that ecological footprint responds to positive and negative fiscal decentralization asymmetrically in the long run and short run. However, the nature of the response varies significantly across countries… Show more

“…Consequently, they move toward using environmentally friendly energy sources when their revenues grow, improving the environmental quality. Zahra and Badeeb (2022), Pirgaip and Dinçergök (2020), Adams et al (2020), andJiang et al (2019) confirm our results, but Liu and Zhang (2022) and Adedoyin and Zakari (2020) have achieved different results.…”

“…These barriers make it very difficult to adopt and maintain sustainable energy to alleviate energy poverty in rural areas. Economic policy uncertainty has a big and negative impact on climate change (Zahra and Badeeb, 2022). Policymakers should achieve the optimal level of decentralization in order to encourage energy innovation.…”

“…Finally, most previous studies have used carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions as a proxy to capture environmental degradation; this study used the ecological footprint as a proxy for environmental quality. Therefore, the ecological footprint measured in global hectares (gha) is the best proxy for environmental quality compared to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions [ 8 , 13 , 17 , 18 , 21 , 44 , 55 63 ].…”
