The main objective of this study was to inform evidence-based financial strategies and policy directions for Uzbekistan’s ambitious greenhouse agriculture expansion by quantifying how integration with agricultural data platforms affects key operational metrics like crop productivity, expenditures, profitability, and technical efficiency. The core methodological approach integrated econometric modeling techniques (production, cost, and profit functions) with data envelopment analysis to conduct comprehensive techno-economic assessments across a representative sample of 58 greenhouse facilities using primary data collected on yields, costs, technology deployment levels, and digital platform accessibility. A key finding was that involvement in digital supply chain coordination platforms corresponded to a 36% increase in profitability, coupled with a 19% reduction in expenses, a 29% improvement in crop yields, and a 22% boost in optimized technical efficiency scores relative to conventional practices after controlling for technology adoption and other factors. This novel contribution provides quantifiable evidence on the synergistic productivity, financial sustainability, and climate resilience dividends unlocked by aligning physical infrastructure upgrades with virtual enhancements around data visibility and supply network integration to overcome constraints facing smallholder agricultural operations. The interdisciplinary analysis outlines an integrated roadmap for smart greenhouse expansion through investments in transparency tools, digital ecosystems, and workforce training. IntroductionThe sustainable development of China’s food system is an essential requirement for realizing the digital transformation of agriculture and rural areas and the main target for the big release of agricultural and rural digitalization dividends and the scale of feedback. What are the current trends of change in China’s agricultural and rural digitization and sustainable development of the food system? Have they achieved a high level of coordinated development? What are the factors constraining their coordinated development?MethodsThis work is based on 30 Chinese provincial administrative areas from 2011 to 2020. We adopt the entropy weight method to calculate the comprehensive development index of the agricultural and rural digitization and food system sustainability, respectively. The coupling degree and coupling coordination degree of the two systems are calculated by applying the coupling coordination degree model. The obstacle degree model was used to diagnose the obstacles constraining the coupling and coordinated development of the coupled systems.ResultsThis study found that the development index of China’s provincial agricultural and rural digitization and food system sustainability increased gradually from 2011 to 2020. The coupling of the two systems is mainly in the high-level coupling stage, but the coupling coordination degree is primarily in the low and medium coupling coordination intervals. These results are heterogeneous across China’s four geographic regions: east, center, west, and northeast. The level of rural digital platform construction and rural digital industrialization is the most essential indicator-level and element-level barriers to agricultural and rural digitalization, respectively. Per capita food possession and food stability are, respectively, the most critical indicator-level and element-level barriers to the food system sustainability.DiscussionThe research in this work contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the evolutionary trends in agriculture and rural digitalization and the food system sustainability in the country as a whole and within the country. Although the two systems have not achieved a high level of coordinated development, the coupling degree and coupled coordination degree show a positive feedback relationship. The analysis of the obstacle factors helps to recognize the main bottlenecks constraining the coupled and coordinated development of the systems at a more specific level.

Understanding the detailed web of factors influencing changes in cultivated areas at the household level is critical for sustainable development in the dynamics of agricultural systems. Households, as basic units within the agricultural framework, are at the center of decision-making processes that have a direct impact on land use patterns. Hence this study estimated the socio-economic and institutional factors that are associated with changes in the area of land under cultivation and associated perceptions. The study was carried out in the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality, where land cultivation has drastically dropped. A total of 400 respondents were chosen randomly. Estimates of the socio-economic and institutional variables that affect changes in the area under cultivation were made using the Multinomial Logit Regression model. Descriptive results revealed that most respondents reported a decrease in the area of land they had under cultivation and few reported an increase or no change. The results further revealed mixed perceptions regarding any potential increase in the amount of land cultivated. Both negative and positive perceptions were noted. The empirical results indicate that livestock ownership and marital status are associated with a decrease in the amount of land cultivated, while the number of family members and access to extension services are related to an increase in amount of land cultivated. Institutional factors could be leveraged to promote an increase in rural cultivated land.
