The impact of economic complexity on carbon emissions: evidence from France

Abstract: This paper reanalyzes the determinants of the CO emissions in France. For this purpose, it considers the unit root test with two structural breaks and a dynamic ordinary least squares estimation. The paper also considers the effects of the energy consumption and the economic complexity on CO emissions. First, it is observed that the EKC hypothesis is valid in France. Second, the positive effect of the energy consumption on CO emissions is obtained. Third, it is observed that a higher economic complexity suppre… Show more

“…According to existing studies [66,78,79], the sectoral structure of the economy and the composition of energy consumption (solid fuels, oil, gas, and renewable energy), as well as the economic complexity [27] influence the level of pollutant emissions. The economic complexity was chosen as the primary explanatory variable because it is considered an accurate predictor of economic growth and expression of a skill-based, knowledge-based and sophisticated production [22], which was not included before in a panel analysis of environmental impact.…”

“…In other words, if products complexity creates more greenhouse gas emission, the import can be an alternative. However, as Can and Gozgor (2017) [27] stated, a detailed analysis of the scale of environmental degradation in each industry is needed.…”

“…There is a scarcity of bibliographical resources regarding the link between economic complexity and pollution. The study of Can and Gozgor (2017) [17] highlights the impact of economic complexity index on carbon emissions in France. For the first time, the economic complexity (ECI) is introduced in a model testing the Environmental Kuznets validity in France over the period 1964-2014.…”

“…Additionally, at these stages, manufacturers use cleaner technologies to get away from the factors that contributed to air pollution during the production process. Moreover, high-income countries tend to limit those manufacturing products that cause pollution (Can and Gozgor, 2017).…”
