The Impact of Diving on Rocky Sublittoral Communities: A Case Study of a Bryozoan Population

Abstract: In 1992 a diving buoy was installed within a marine reserve off the northeastern coast of Spain, where diving had not previously been permitted. We monitored the effects of diving on a colonial bryozoan ( Pentapora fascialis ) and carried out the study on two distinct benthic habitats, boulders and vertical walls. We used a "beyond before-after/control-impact" sampling design in which one potentially affected and several control locations were sampled simultaneously before and after the installation of the div… Show more

“…Because they contain many sessile, long-lived organisms with slow growth dynamics and fragile skeletons, coralligenous communities are extremely prone to mechanical disturbance induced by trawling, fishing nets, anchoring and uncontrolled scuba-diving activities (Garrabou et al, 1998;Ballesteros, 2006;UNEP, 2007). In the last decade, several key-species of the Mediterranean coralligenous suffered dramatic mass mortalities, which were attributed to some unusually high summer temperatures, possibly related to global warming (Romano et al, 2000;Perez et al, 2000;Cerrano et al, 2000;Ballesteros, 2003).…”

“…Effects of divers on gorgonians are strongest in the few areas with high levels of visitation, as is true for other systems subjected to damage from trampling or diving (Liddle & Kay 1987, Brosnan & Crumrine 1994, Garrabou et al 1998, Tratalos & Austin 2001. Paradoxically, these areas (with high levels of visitation) are also often those with the highest theoretical protection, such as marine parks and other marine protected areas (MPAs).…”

“…The development of monitoring programmes needs the assessment of effective sampling designs and methods in order to optimize efforts and to give appropriate responses to ecological problems. Coralligenous assemblages have been widely studied in relation to species composition (Laubier 1966, Hong 1982, Garrabou et al 2002, Casellato and Stefanon 2008, patterns of spatial and temporal variability (Ferdeghini et al 2000, Cocito et al 2002, Piazzi et al 2004, Balata et al 2005, 2006a, 2006b, Virgilio et al 2006, Ponti et al 2011, and responses to anthropogenic impacts (Hong 1983, Garrabou et al 1998, Balata et al 2007a, 2007b, Piazzi et al 2007, Roghi et al 2010. Recently, several methods have been developed to assess ecological quality of coralligenous assemblages through a non-destructive approach (Kipson et al 2011, Deter et al 2012a, Gatti et al 2012.…”
