The coronavirus pandemic, which first impacted European societies in early 2020, has created a twofold crisis by combining a health threat with economic turmoil. While the crisis has affected all European societies very significantly, its impact varies across countries, social groups, and societal domains. In an effort to provide a first overview of the effect of the coronavirus crisis, in this editorial we discuss contributions of 58 papers published as part of this special issue. These early research papers illustrate the varied impact of the pandemic on various areas of social life. The first group of studies in this special issue analyzes the effect of the pandemic on social inequalities with respect to gender, ethnic otherness, education, and work. A second stream of research focuses on the psychological consequences of the pandemic, especially with respect to wellbeing and resilience. Thirdly, the crisis is discussed on a societal level, in regard to welfare states, social policies, and approaches to crisis governance. In a fourth line of inquiry, several studies have analyzed the impact of the pandemic on social solidarity and cohesion. A fifth strand of research is devoted to examining the role of culture and lifestyles. This review ends with a discussion of areas for future research trajectories.

The study contains a dataset from survey on the opinions of labour migrants from Ukraine in Poland, collected at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants (conducted in May and June 2020) were 617 migrant workers from Ukraine who remained in Poland during the first period of the pandemic in Poland. Due to limitations in face-to-face contact, the survey was conducted online (Google Forms questionnaire). The developed questionnaire was available in three languages: Ukrainian, Polish and Russian. The researchers were supported in sending the questionnaire by NGOs, Ukrainian minority organisations, as well as labour migrants from Ukraine who had participated in previous research conducted by the team. The questionnaire contained 34 questions (in three languages: Ukrainian, Polish and Russian), including attribute variables of the participants). Questions addressed issues such as perception of COVID risks, changes in the respondent's labor market situation, and assessment of their quality-of-life changes. The study will contribute to the knowledge of institutions and NGOs that work with labour migrants. The data collected provides a starting point for comparing the situation of migrant workers one year after the pandemic. The results of the study can be taken into account when planning migration management in the host country.

Pandemi Covid-19 membawa dampak besar terhadap praktik pembelajaran yang beralih menggunakan metode online. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pelaksanaan, kendala, dan strategi sekolah dalam mengatasi kendala pembelajaran daring di kelas III SD Brawijaya Smart School. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi untuk pengumpulan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran daring dilaksanakan dengan memanfaatkan platform dan aplikasi berbasis online yaitu Microsoft Teams. Guru melakukan virtual meeting di awal pembelajaran untuk menyampaikan materi, kemudian memanfaatkan Youtube dan Whatsapp untuk penguatan materi, penugasan, dan penilaian. Kendala-kendala yang muncul diantaranya (a) tidak semua siswa menggunakan handphone secara mandiri, (b) adanya orang tua yang belum mampu mendampingi belajar siswa dengan maksimal, (c) jaringan internet yang kurang stabil, dan (d) terbatasnya waktu yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran daring, sehingga guru kesulitan untuk memantau sikap siswa saat belajar dirumah. Langkah strategis yang sudah dilakukan sekolah yaitu (a) peningkatan kapasitas guru dalam penguasaan teknologi digital, (b) penggunaan media pembelajaran daring yang lebih variatif dan interaktif untuk mengurangi kebosanan belajar siswa, (c) mengupayakan peyampaian materi kepada siswa sehari sebelum pembelajaran, dan (d) melibatkan orang tua siswa secara intensif untuk komunikasi dan koordinasi dalam upaya membantu mengawasi dan mendampingi belajar siswa di rumah.
