“…In the last decade, cephalopod welfare has gained much attention. This is due, in large part, to their addition to the list of animals regulated for use in scientific procedures within the European Union ( European Parliament and Council of the European Union, 2010 ; Andrews et al, 2013 ; Smith et al, 2013 ; Di Cristina et al, 2015 ). Directive 2010/63/EU stipulates that all surgical and investigative procedures applied to vertebrates and now also cephalopods for research purposes should be carried out in such a way as to minimize pain, suffering, distress and lasting harm (PSDLH).…”

“…As the study of cephalopod neurobiology progresses, it is critical to make every effort to avoid unnecessary pain, suffering, distress and lasting harm (PSDLH) to the animals. This will be greatly facilitated by determining whether or not cephalopods are capable of experiencing pain and suffering, and to validate our standards of anesthesia for this taxon, investigations that are only just beginning ( Crook et al, 2013 ; Alupay et al, 2014 ; Di Cristina et al, 2015 ; Butler-Struben et al, 2018 ). Such work is especially important given recent legislative changes (see above) and our growing knowledge of their sensory and cognitive sophistication.…”

“…Since 2013, cephalopods used in experimentation are protected in the European Union through the application of Directive 2010/63/EU (EU 2010). The application of this law generated an impact in research and aquaculture (Sykes et al 2012;Ponte et al 2013;Smith et al 2013;Fiorito et al 2014;Di Cristina et al 2015). Unfortunately, at time of publication (2010) and until the end of 2017, the Directive omitted important information regarding the housing and husbandry conditions of this class.…”

“…Such European Policies and Directives have implications for cephalopods in scientific research, aquaculture or public display, and relevance for fisheries and ecology, i.e., Directive 2010/63/EU, EU Common Fisheries Policy, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the revision of IUCN Red List (review in: ICES, 2014; Di Cristina et al, 2015; Xavier et al, 2015). …”
