PurposeThe aim of this study is to identify the way in which research on new business models in agri-food sector has been developed, in order to identify the main lines of work followed and determine a future research agenda in this field.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review of the literature is carried out, by applying the PRISMA method to identify and classify the main articles published on agri-food business models in journals included in the Web of Science Core Collection database.FindingsThe systematic literature review has identified three main forms of business models in the agri-food sector: sustainable business models, technology-based business models and cooperative business models. The three types of new business models are complementary and can sometimes be adopted together. The identification of these types of business models and the variants included in each of them is a valid starting point for new developments in this field.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of this study are those typical of any literature review and derived from the methodology used. The establishment of criteria relating to time, language, type of publication or database chosen means that this review may have left out relevant studies in this field of research. It is therefore recommended that new reviews be carried out with different criteria in the coming years in order to supplement the results obtained in this study.Originality/valueSome research gaps were identified that should be further explored in the future. First, the relationship between digitisation and technological innovation in agri-food business models and the level of implementation of sustainable objectives in these business models has not been researched thoroughly. In addition, and despite the fact that the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted innovation in agri-food business models, the authors have detected a lack of papers focused on solving problems arising from the shortage of raw materials or labour, possible energy crises or external dependence on local markets when it comes to meeting demand. The war in Ukraine has demonstrated the limitations of international markets, mainly the European market, when it comes to dealing with problems arising from this type of crisis.

This study develops an economic development index, a social development index, an environmental sustainability index, and an information and communication technology index to explore the comparison of 34 countries in global sustainable development (GSD) and its promoting indicators, and digitalization. The composite Z-score method is used to create the above-mentioned indexes between 2000 - 2021. The statistical values of these indexes are used to explicate the performance of these countries in all components of sustainable development and digitalization. The correlation coefficients among the mentioned indicators are also estimated to measure associations among them. The regression coefficients of explanatory variables with GSD and digitalization are also estimated using a log-linear regression model. There is reported a high diversity in digitalization, economic development (ED), social development (SD), environmental sustainability (ES), and GSD across countries. GSD is not possible without ED, SD, and ES. Digitalization has a positive impact on sustainable, social, and economic development. Digital technology helps to increase GSD, while GSD seems favorable to increasing digitalization. Digitalization improves as ED, SD, and GSD increase. While digitalization has a negative impact on ES. Green innovation, green and appropriate technologies, green entrepreneurship, and technological advancement would be supportive to increase digitalization and GSD.

Overcoming strategies for supply chain digitization barriers: Implications for sustainable development goals

This paper examines barriers to supply chain digitization (SCD) and offers mitigation strategies, focusing on sustainable development goals (SDGs), technological adoption, and financial constraints. A hybrid research approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, has been used to analyze significant SCD barriers and strategies under budget constraints. According to the findings, “lack of proper research and development facility” is the most influential barrier to SCD. The overcoming strategies are then ranked by how likely they are to be implemented in response to barriers. From a sustainability perspective, “improving privacy and security” is identified as the most important strategy. Further, a mathematical model is developed to facilitate investment‐related decision‐making by determining the most suitable overcoming strategies under budget constraints. The proposed mathematical model is evaluated across a range of investments and for a set of overcoming strategies within a given scenario. The findings demonstrate that optimal investments of $1.78 million can cover the top two overcoming strategies for implementation. Furthermore, the results indicate that a minimum investment of $1.9 million is required to adopt all 10 overcoming strategies.
