The Impact of Different Incentive Policies on Hybrid Electric Vehicle Demand and Price: An International Comparison

Abstract: Significant efforts to incentivize the uptake of energy efficient vehicles (EEVs) are evident across the globe. Given EEV markets are dynamic, and consumer demand may fluctuate in response to incentives, this may also lead to other market forces influencing prices. An analysis of EEV incentives, therefore, must account for the possible endogeneity between demand and pricing. Here we estimate the effects of different types of incentives on the demand and price premiums of a specific group of EEVs: plug-in and c… Show more

“…The final category (EV charging) covers charging infrastructure construction subsidy and charging discount. The former encourages the construction of EV charging infrastructures so as to meet the fast charging demand caused by the rapid growth of EV ownership, and the later aims to further reduce the driving cost of EVs since the price of electricity is relatively lower than that of oil [9]. As we can see, the above four categories encourage people to adopt EVs from various aspects, and they play crucial roles in promoting EVs.…”

“…Many of the financial incentives for adoption of electric vehicles and energy-efficient technologies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia are quite large (e.g., Germany offers a subsidy of up to 6,000 Euros per electric vehicle). Such large subsidies are likely large enough to be effective; in the past, incentives of this magnitude have been successful at motivating uptake of hybrid and electric vehicles 94 , 95 , as well as energy efficiency technologies such as heat pumps 96 .…”

“…We have decided not to delve into the cost issue because this analysis strongly depends on the location where these sources are intended to be purchased, and prices vary significantly from one country to another [57,58]. An operational cost analysis also depends on the location where the vehicle will be used since the energy cost changes.…”
