The impact of COVID-19 on TB: a review of the data

Abstract: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, models predicted hundreds of thousands of additional TB deaths as a result of health service disruption. To date, empirical evidence on the effects of COVID-19 on TB outcomes has been limited. Here we summarise the evidence available at a country level, identifying broad mechanisms by which COVID-19 may modify TB burden and mitigation efforts. From the data, it is clear that there have been substantial disruptions to TB health services and an increase in vulnerability to TB. Ev… Show more

“…A recent review by McQuaid et al provides a detailed summary of studies that have quantified the country-level TB service disruptions among the 48 TB, TB-HIV and multidrug-resistant HBCs. 12 The overall conclusion was that TB health services have decreased significantly in these settings due to COVID-19. In order to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on TB, a comprehensive and coordinated approach to TB care and control that addresses the multiple layers of TB care is urgently needed.…”

“…Despite the seemingly different COVID-19 experience in SSA, a major unintended consequence of widespread lockdowns was the severe disruptions in the continent's response to its main infectious disease killers, including the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic [8,9]. In 2020, there were 10 million incident TB cases globally, with the Africa region accounting for approximately 25% of TB cases [10].…”

“…Even though 2020 witnessed the dramatic health threat by COVID-19 leading to morbidity and mortality rates that exceeded those of TB, it is likely that in the near future TB will regain its inglorious lead position of the major killer amongst all infectious agents (Stop Tb Partnership Civil society-led Tb/ Covid-19 Working Group, 2020;McQuaid et al, 2021;World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). COVID-19 has dramatically impacted on TB notification rates with serious consequences for TB control.…”
