This study shows that farmers in arid and semi-arid land can improve their efficiency if they have access to agricultural extension services. An exhaustive survey was used to obtain data from 423 cotton producers in the arid zones and 144 of wetlands in Burkina Faso. The method of the directional distance function modeling a multi-output technology was used. The results show that cotton farmers in the arid zones are not technically more inefficient than those in wetlands. On average, arid zone producers have a technical inefficiency of 0.056 while that of wetland producers is around 0.052. The agricultural extension, defined as receiving visits and advice from technical agents, is important for producers because it helps farmers choose soil and water conservation techniques and fertilizers adapted to the Agro-climatic conditions of their respective zones. Agriculture extension also helps farmers of the arid zones to reduce their technical inefficiency by advising them to cultivate small agricultural plots. On average, in these zones, the size of an agricultural plot is around 1.03 ha compared to those of wetlands which is about 1.6 ha.

La présente étude a pour objectif d’évaluer l’efficacité et le rôle de la communication participative dans les champ école paysans (CEP) mis en œuvre par la Chambre Régionale d’Agriculture (CRA) de Diffa (Niger). La méthodologie utilisée s’est appuyée sur la recherche documentaire, l’observation directe, les enquêtes de terrain auprès des apprenants, des responsables des CEP et des encadreurs (CRA). Au total, 112 personnes, réparties en 96 apprenants, 12 responsables de CEP et 4 encadreurs de CRA, ont été enquêtées sur six sites d’intervention du CRA/Diffa dont trois sites dans la commune urbaine de Diffa, deux sites dans la commune rurale de Gueskerou et un site dans la commune rurale de Chetimari. L’analyse des données a été faite au moyen du logiciel Sphinx V5. Les résultats de l’étude ont montré des taux de l’ordre de 80% à 100% pour le degré de participation au CEP des apprenants, un niveau de connaissance de 100% du thème principal. Il ressort, aussi, des résultats de l’étude un taux allant de 78,12% à 100% de niveau d’adoption des techniques et pratiques agricoles par les apprenants. L’approche CEP, en tant que méthodologie de recherche-action formative et participative, se présente comme une voie convaincante pour faciliter l’adoption et la diffusion des innovations à travers le monde rural. L’originalité et la simplicité du processus permetent non seulement une meilleure appropriation des innovations, mais aussi une participation active des paysans à la production végétale vivrière d‘où une valorisation de la fonction paysanne.

Agricultural advisory services play a key role in disseminating agricultural information and technology to farmers. This study aims to assess the impact of agricultural advisory on improving agricultural productivity in Benin. The study uses cross-sectional data collected from randomly selected maize and cotton farmers located in the cotton basin of northern Benin. A total of 809 cotton and maize farmers (with access to farm advisory services or not) from 81 villages in the study area were selected. To overcome selection bias and the problem of endogeneity associated with the impact assessment, regression with endogenous treatment effect model was used. Besides assessing the effect of the farm advisory on productivity, this model also has the advantage of highlighting the main factors determining farmers' access to advisory services. The results show that access to advisory services has a positive and significant impact on farm productivity. Maize and cotton farmers with access to the advisory services have a higher yield (yield improvement of 552.3 kg/ha and 668 kg/ha for maize and cotton, respectively) compared to their counterparts without access. In addition to access to agricultural advice, education, membership of farmers' group, use of tractor, quantity of mineral fertiliser, use of cover crops, access to credit and the number of cattle have a positive effect on productivity. On the other hand, age, household size, and use of improved varieties have the opposite effect. Furthermore, the main factors influencing farmers' access to extension services are age, gender, membership of a cooperative and distance between village and the municipal town. Strengthening the capacity of extension services is therefore essential for improving agricultural productivity.
