The impact of comorbidity on health-related quality of life in elderly patients with chronic myeloid leukemia

Abstract: The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether the presence of comorbidities was associated with a lower health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in elderly patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). A sample of 174 CML patients aged 60 years or above was analyzed. HRQOL was assessed with the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item ShortForm Health Survey (SF-36). A number of pre-selected sociodemographic and disease-related factors were considered as potential confounding factors for the association b… Show more

“…Response, including deep MR, to TKI treatment in patients with CP CML can be influenced by numerous factors, such as risk score, sex, adherence, and dose intensity [35]. Likewise, HRQoL can be affected by patient and treatment characteristics, including age, sex, comorbidities, and the side effects of the TKIs used to treat CML [29,[36][37][38][39][40]. It is also expected that these factors may influence the relationship between MR and FACT-Leu total score on an individual patient level.…”

“…In addition to their negative impact on non‐cancer mortality and overall survival, comorbidities negatively affect quality of life in cancer survivors (Arredondo et al, ; Efficace et al, ). Therefore, it is critical for nurses to attempt to prevent and sufficiently manage their patients' existing comorbidities in survivorship care.…”

“…Therefore, the question whether relatively early responses with TKI therapy could influence HRQoL outcomes in patients with CML-CP during long-term treatment remains unanswered. Most of the studies on HRQoL in patients with CML receiving TKI therapy are cross-sectional [ 14 , 21 ] and longitudinal studies with long-term follow-ups, with a limited number of such studies in Asian patients are rare.…”
