The impact of closed-loop electronic medication management on time to first dose: a comparative study between paper and digital hospital environments

Abstract: The study indicates medication turnaround times utilising a closed-loop EMMS are less compared to paper-based systems. This improvement may be attributable to increased accessibility of medications using automated dispensing cabinets and electronic medication administration records flagging tasks to nurses in real time.

“…Based on the present study and earlier data [4,19] ADCs can improve the medication process by bringing the medicines near the patients, offering real-time stock control and helping to ensure with barcode scanning that the right medicine has been retrieved. ADCs have also an essential role in building the closed loop medication system which allows the real-time documentation of medication and patient information [20,21].…”

“…Closed-loop Electronic Medication Management Systems (EMMS) have been seen as a potential technology to prevent medication errors and enhance the quality of the medication process, although the research on them is still limited [ 9 , 10 ]. Electronic medication management is a broad term covering all computer systems involved: it refers to a closed-loop system that encompasses prescribing, administration, pharmacy verification, smart infusion pumps, automated dispensing cabinets, barcode medication administration, and anything that has electronic medicine datasets or encompasses medication management processes [ 11 , 12 ].…”
