The impact of climate change on food systems, diet quality, nutrition, and health outcomes: A narrative review

Abstract: Many consequences of climate change undermine the stability of global food systems, decreasing food security and diet quality, and exposing vulnerable populations to multiple forms of malnutrition. The emergence of pandemics such as Covid-19 exacerbate the situation and make interactions even more complex. Climate change impacts food systems at different levels, including changes in soil fertility and crop yield, composition, and bioavailability of nutrients in foods, pest resistance, and risk of malnutrition.… Show more

“…Since COVID-19, we have seen tremendous inflation in grocery stores. Effects from climate change, such as drought and extreme weather, affect the global food chain and cause production shortages, contributing to the rise in food costs 44–46. Inflation at grocery stores affects BIPOC women at a higher rate and reduces nutrient access due to high costs.…”

[44][45][46] Inflation at grocery stores affects BIPOC women at a higher rate and reduces nutrient access due to high costs. As 2024 approaches, food prices have been predicted to decrease but not return to prepandemic prices; all food processes are expected to increase by 2.8%.…”

“…These environmental changes, coupled with rising global temperatures, are not only diminishing the quantity of food produced but are also compromising its nutritional quality. This ongoing climatic challenge will worsen over time and necessitate a major shift in agricultural practices, driving the need for innovative, climate‐resilient farming techniques as well as novel food production technologies that are decoupled from the field 4 .…”

“…In recent decades, there has been a growing concern regarding the impact of climate change on food systems (Fanzo et al., 2018; Owino et al., 2022). The effects of climate change include rising temperatures and alterations in carbon and biochemical processes (Mirón et al., 2023).…”
