This paper illustrates the impact of embedding an insulation layer of variable thermal conductivity in a typical building wall on the cooling effect and energy performance. The evaluation was performed by applying a conjugate heat transfer model, which was tested in extremely hot conditions of Al Ain (UAE). The thermal performance of a building incorporating insulation layers of variable thermal conductivity (k-value) was compared to a non-variable thermal conductivity system by quantifying the additional heat transferred due to the k-relationship with time. The results show that, when the k-value is a function of operating temperature, its effects on the temperature profile through the wall assembly during daytime is significant compared with that obtained when a constant k-value for the polystyrene (EPS) insulation is adopted. A similar trend in the evolution of temperatures during the day and across the wall section was observed when EPS material with different moisture content was evaluated. For the polyurethane insulation, the inner surface temperature reached 44 °C when constant k-value was adopted, increasing to 48.5 °C when the k-value was allowed to vary under the same ambient conditions.

This paper investigates the simultaneous changes of combined temperature and moisture content on thermal conductivity, k-value, of polystyrene (EPS) building insulation material. In building energy analysis, the heat transfer through its envelope usually neglect the transport of moisture in the porous structure of the envelope and a constant thermal conductivity, k-value, of thermal insulation material is used to assess the heat transfer through the building envelope. In reality, the building envelope is subjected to the combined thermal and moisture gradients so that an accurate heat transfer determination requires a simultaneous calculation of both sensible and latent effects. Actually, the k-value is a complex function of temperature, moisture content, and density, which requires more accurate evaluation to lead to data that are more realistic to achieve a precise building energy assessment. The findings revealed that the impact of the change of these parameters on the cooling load calculation is significant, especially at a high operating temperature and moisture content.

Informes de la Construcción, 69(548) RESUMENEl presente trabajo expone la situación actual del comportamiento ambiental, a lo largo de su ciclo de vida, de los conductos de climatización realizados con paneles de lana mineral de vidrio. Su uso cada vez es más habitual en la realización de instalaciones de alta eficiencia, sustituyendo frecuentemente a los conductos de chapa metálica revestidos con mantas de lana mineral de vidrio, debido a las ventajas que aportan a la instalación. El análisis del ciclo de vida nos permite cuantificar el impacto medioambiental de estos productos. El procedimiento será realizado utilizando como base la norma UNE-EN 15804:2012+A1, que define el marco común para armonizar la estructura de las Declaraciones Ambientales de Producto en materiales de construcción y da veracidad con base científica a los datos ambientales aportados, al ser verificados por un tercero.
