The impact of bars and interactions on optically selected AGNs in spiral galaxies

Abstract: Aims. With the aim of performing a suitable comparison of the internal process of galactic bars with respect to the external effect of interactions on driving gas toward the inner most region of the galaxies, we explored and compared the efficiency of both mechanisms on central nuclear activity in optically selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in spiral galaxies. Methods. We selected homogeneous samples of barred AGNs and active objects residing in pair systems, derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDS… Show more

“…The values of f bar may increase by up to ∼ 10% for z < 0.07. Similar to our results, previous attempts to connect AGN fueling to bars have yielded negative (Ho et al 1997b;Cisternas et al 2013;Cheung et al 2015;Galloway et al 2015;Goulding et al 2017;Neumann et al 2019) or at best ambiguous (Laine et al 2002;Alonso et al 2018) results.…”

“…Bars evolve and influence galaxies in a variety of ways, which becomes clear when we compare barred and unbarred galaxies. For instance, the inner regions of barred galaxies show systematically higher metallicities and star-formation rates (Ellison et al 2011) as well as increased nuclear activity and accretion onto central black holes (Alonso et al 2018). Moreover, bars typically exhibit flat age and metallicity gradients along their major axis, a clear indication of their influence on the inner discs of galaxies (see e.g.…”

“…Oh et al 2012;Chown et al 2019). However, whether galactic bars can significantly affect AGN activity is still under debate (Arsenault 1989;Mulchaey & Regan 1997;Oh et al 2012;Galloway et al 2015;Goulding et al 2017;Alonso et al 2018).…”
