The impact of artificial intelligence on the reading times of radiologists for chest radiographs

Abstract: Whether the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) during the interpretation of chest radiographs (CXRs) would affect the radiologists’ workload is of particular interest. Therefore, this prospective observational study aimed to observe how AI affected the reading times of radiologists in the daily interpretation of CXRs. Radiologists who agreed to have the reading times of their CXR interpretations collected from September to December 2021 were recruited. Reading time was defined as the duration in secon… Show more

“…Due to the heterogeneity of algorithms applied, varying experience and background of clinical readers as well as different data sets used for performance testing, comparability between studies is limited. However, AI-based analyses offer several advantages, including improved accuracy, time savings, reproducibility and objectivity [ 22 ]. However, concerns regarding the application of AI for analyses of radiographs need to be recognized.…”

“…The articles on efficiency or accuracy were published during 2021-2023 and were mainly from China and the United States, with three papers each. In seven articles, AI was used to diagnose lung abnormalities [28][29][30][31][32][33][34] and in two articles, AI was applied in breast cancer detection [7,35]. In the remaining articles, AI was used in detecting thyroid nodules [36], acute fractures [37], and intracranial hemorrhage [38] as well as checking endotracheal tube (ETT) placement [39].…”

“…Nevertheless, a basic theoretical understanding of AI can be achieved based on the capabilities of a given AI system: [ 55 ] Narrow AI is the only form of AI that is currently implemented and applied in several disciplines within and outside of the medical domain. Designed to perform a specific task, narrow AI systems have consistently shown the ability to augment the performance of human clinicians in those specific domains [ 9 , 54 , 71 , 72 , 76 ]. However, narrow AI systems remain limited to performing an assigned task and are unable to perform well outside of the predefined framework.…”
