Background High school students are an important target audience for organ donation education. A novel educational intervention focused on Hispanic American (HA) high school students might improve organ donation rates. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted in five Los Angeles High Schools with a high percentage of HA students. A ‘culturally sensitive’ educational program was administered to students in the 9th to 12th grades. Pre-intervention surveys that assessed awareness, knowledge, perception and beliefs regarding donation as well as the intent to become an organ donor were compared to post-intervention surveys. Results A total of 10,146 high school students participated in the study. After exclusions, 4876 pre-intervention and 3182 post-intervention surveys were analyzed. A significant increase in the overall knowledge, awareness, and beliefs regarding donation was observed after the intervention, as evidenced by a significant increase in the percentage of correct answers on the survey (41% pre- v. 44% post-, p<0.0001). When specifically examining HA students, there was a significant increase in the intent to donate organs (AOR 1.21, 95%CI: 1.09, 1.34, p=0.0003). Conclusion This is the first study to demonstrate a significant increase in the intent to donate among HA high school students following an educational intervention.

Özet Amaç: Bu çalışma sağlıkla ilgili bölümlerinde okuyan üniversite öğrencilerinin organ bağışı hakkındaki bilgi ve tutumları belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Kesitsel nitelikte olan bu çalışma 15 Nisan-15 Mayıs 2015 tarihleri arasında yapılmıştır. Basit rastgele örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiş ve çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden 764 öğrenci örnekleme dahil edilmiştir. Araştırmada veriler sosyo-demografik bilgi formu ve araştır-macılar tarafından ilgili literatür incelenerek oluşturulan organ bağışı ile ilgili bilgi ve tutumlarını içeren anket formu ile toplanmıştır. Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 20,66±1,73 olup, %43,84'ü erkek, %56,16'sı kadındır. Öğrencilerin sadece %2,4'ünün organlarını bağışladığı görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin %38,7'si organ bağışında bulunmak istediğini ifade ederken, %24'ü organlarını bağışlamak istemediğini ifade etmiştir. Daha önce organ bağışı hakkında bilgi sahibi olanlar grubun %56,5'ini oluşturmaktadır. Sonuç: Öğrencilerin bilgi düzeylerinin iyi olduğu görülmüştür. Bu bulgular doğrultusunda geleceğin sağlık profesyonellerinin organ bağısı konusunda tutumlarını değiştirme konusunda desteklenmesi gerektiği düşünülmektedir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Bilgi-tutum, organ bağışı, organ nakli, öğrenci, Abstract Objective: This study was conducted to determine the knowledge and attitudes about organ donation of college students studying in health-related sections. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 15 April -15 May 2015. The sample of the study consisted of 764 students. Students are selected by simple random sampling and the students who agreed to participate were included in the sample. Data of the study were collected using socio-demographic information form and questionnaire about knowledge and attitudes of organ donation prepared by the researchers in line with the literature. Results: The mean age of the students was 20.66 ± 1.73 and then 43.84% of male and 56.16's% of female. The study showed that only 2.4% of the students donated organs. 38.7% of students stated that while seeking an organ donor, 24% of students reported that they did not want to donate their organs. There were seen that 56.5% of students received information about organ donation before. Conclusion: The knowledge level of the students were found to be good. In line with these findings, it is thought that health care professionals of the future should be supported to change their attitudes about organ ties. Amaç: Gelece^e i §iktutan gençlerin organ ba^i^i ile ilgili olumlu tutum geli §tirmeleri onlari ileride birer organ bagiççisi haline getirerek organ yetersizliginin önüne geçecektir. Bu çaliçma Istanbul ili Zeytinburnu ilçesi'nde ögrenim gören lise son sinif ö^rencilerinin organ bagiçi ve nakli konusundaki bilgi düzeyleri ve tutumlarina bilgilendirmenin etkisini belirlemek amaciyla tanimlayici olarak yapildi. Gereç ve Yöntemler: Zeytinburnu ilçesi'nde 2010-2011 egitim-ögretim yilmda lise son sinifta ögrenim gören ö|rencilerden 2000'i organ bagiçi ve nakli konusunda bilgilendirildi. Bilgilendirme öncesinde ve sonrasinda anketi tam ve dogru dolduran 845 ögrenci çaliçma kapsamma alindi. Anketin birinci bölümü 7 tanimlayici özellikten, ikinci bölümü 3 dikkat sorusundan, ücüncü bölümü 20 bilgi sorusundan ve dördüncü bölümü 10 tutum sorusundan oluçmakta idi. Sonuçlarin analizisayi,yüzde. Me Nemar testi, Wilcoxon içaretli sira testi ve t-testi kullanilarak gerçekieçtirildi. Bulgular: Ögrencilerin %58,3'ü bilgilendirme öncesi organ bagi^i ve nakli hakkinda bilgi sahibi oldugunu belirtirken, bilgilendirme sonrasi bu oran %84'e yükseldi (p<0,001). Bilgilendirme öncesi en fazia televizyon yaymiarini (%37,9|, bilgilendirme sonrasi ise en fazIa saglik personellerini (%44,9) bilgi kaynagi olarak gösterdiler.
