The impact of ageing on stroke subtypes, length of stay and mortality: study in the province of Teruel, Spain

Abstract: The impact of ageing on case fatality and mortality by stroke was substantial. Whereas mortality by stroke stabilized after decreasing in our province and in Spain in the last decade, fatality rates have significantly increased in our province because of the high proportion of elderly people and to the high rate of post-stroke complications.

“…The incidence of cerebrovascular diseases among the elderly is the highest, however, the pathophysiological mechanism of brain responding to cerebral ischemia in the elderly is still poorly understood (11). Old age is a major risk factor for the diseases and is associated with their increasing incidence and mortality (12,13). In most developed countries, ~87% of strokes are ischemic and originate from intracranial arterial occlusion (IAO), being the major cause of patient death and adult disability (14,15).…”

“…Since we have still a low rate of immigration, the population is ethnically homogeneous. The mean approximate incidence rate of stroke was 155/ 100,000 per year from 1994 to 1998 [14], but it rose to 183 in the period 1999 -2001 [15]. The community of Bajo Aragón is located in the north of the province and its population is approximately half that of the entire province.…”

“…Aging is an important risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) [21, 22]. But the factors that cause the relatively benign process of normal brain aging to the pathological cascade that leads to AD are unknown.…”
