The impact of a visual arts program on quality of life, communication, and well-being of people living with dementia: a mixed-methods longitudinal investigation

Abstract: Background: Research reviews highlight methodological limitations and gaps in the evidence base for the arts in dementia care. In response, we developed a 12-week visual art program and evaluated the impact on people living with dementia through a mixed-methods longitudinal investigation.

“…The study of a visual arts program (Windle et al, 2017) is a good example of a convincing mixed methods, multiple measures, multisite study. It is important that real-life clinical interventions be included in our literature and reviews, as their inclusion is more likely to lead to large implementation programs.…”

“…Here it is significant that people's artistic, imaginative, and emotional capacities can remain strong for years after dementia onset. A growing body of evidence now reveals that arts-based and cultural interventions can elevate people above the stresses of dementia, slow degeneration, improve memory and communication, help drive social interaction and (re)connection, and provide an important means of self-expression (e.g., Beard, 2011;Gould, 2013;Windle et al, 2014Windle et al, , 2018Basting et al, 2016;Young et al, 2016;Dowlen et al, 2017;Windle, 2018). The advantage of non-pharmacological interventions is multiple, with few, if any, negative side-effects and a positive impact that can even exceed those of pharmacotherapy intervention (Herholz et al, 2013(Herholz et al, , p. 1236.…”
