The immune system as a system of relations

Abstract: Progress in neuroimmunology established that the nervous and the immune systems are two functionally related physiological systems. Unique sensory and immune receptors enable them to control interactions of the organism with the inner and the outer worlds. Both systems undergo an experience-driven selection process during their ontogeny. They share the same mediators/neurotransmitters and use synapses for intercellular communication. They keep a memory of previous experiences. Immune cells can affect nervous c… Show more

“…Maintaining an optimal immune system is the best preventive medicine. The major function of the immune system is defense against foreign and/or one’s own malignant cells [ 1 ]. Although the immune system depends on genetic factors, other factors may be modulated by lifestyle.…”

“…The human body’s immune system is a large and complex reaction system that can cope with and recognize many environmental factors and respond to various signals ( Dantzer, 2018 ; Daëron, 2022 ). Different types of cells, antibodies, and cytokines interact synergistically to produce immune responses.…”

“…It may recognize and exclude antigenic foreign bodies, coordinate with other body systems, and maintain the stability of the body’s internal environment and physiological balance ( 16 , 17 ). The immune system is a special distributed system, that is closely connected with other biological systems, and it is the most effective weapon against pathogen invasion ( 18 , 19 ). The immune system comprises a network of interactions between immune organs, cells, and active substances, including innate immunity, which provides direct host defense, and adaptive immunity, which has precise memory.…”
