The imaginal ecdysis of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Endogenously‐generated motor programmes were found to underlie the repetitive patterns of muscular activity that perform specific tasks prior to and during adult emergence in locusts. Several of these motor programmes are described. Emergence is brought about by the action of waves of longitudinal segmental contraction that pass anteriorly along the abdomen, working the animal forward out of its old cuticle. Additional motor programmes assist in the extrication of the legs and mouthparts. During ‘St… Show more

“…Observation of ecdysis is additionally facilitated by the fact that it is performed at predictable developmental time points and locomotion is usually limited, in part due to the need to re-form musculo-skeletal attachments. These advantages have enabled not only close behavioural observation but also highly precise measurements of single muscle activity by both classical electrophysiological and modern imaging methods [77,89,90]. Increasingly, genetic methods of physiological manipulation are also being recruited to analyse the neural circuitry and neuromodulatory control of ecdysis [78,91,92].…”
