The identity of Brexit: A cultural psychology analysis

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a culturalist interpretation of the outcome of the Brexit referendum. This interpretation is grounded on the analysis of the U.K.'s cultural milieu, which is part of a more general study of the cultural milieus of several European countries. Specific to the United Kingdom, our analysis is based on a questionnaire carried out on a representative sample of U.K. respondents stratified by sociodemographic variables and geographic region (NUTS1).Responses to the questionnaire were subjecte… Show more

“…The lack of relevance of socio-economic status suggests that identity issues that intersect multiple diverse social groups prevails over socio-economic motives in shaping electoral choices. A similar pattern was found also in a UK study on the Brexit referendum (Veltri et al 2019). Authors tested the hypothesis that UK regions with a higher proportion of Leave vote could be differentiated from those with lower proportion based on the different distribution of symbolic universes.…”

“…Several studies have highlighted the role played by symbolic universes in motivating and channelling social and political behaviour. They proved to orient voting behavior both in Italy [36] and at the Brexit referendum [37]; again, they proved to be associated with the way relevant topics (immigration, Islam, homosexuality, health, participation and democracy, subjectivity) are represented in newspapers [38] as well as with the attitude towards vaccination [39]. Moreover, symbolic universes show different levels of trust in institutions, preference for in-group over out-group members, sense of community, perceived quality of the interpersonal bond, attitudes towards foreigners, adhesion to universalist versus self-centered values [35,40] r Acronym δ G1,r δ G2,r δ G3,r δ G4,r δ G5,r Taken as a whole, the findings reported above provide convergent support to the conclusion that the map of symbolic universes supplies a reliable way of measuring the three parameters of ECHO-EGN which embed cultural pluralism.…”

“…Indeed, these two symbolic universes have proved to be associated with openness to diversity, trust in institutions, flexible cognitive modes, self‐efficacy, and sense of justice (Salvatore et al, ) . Following studies have shown that semiotic capital is associated with Remain vote in the recent Brexit referendum (Veltri, Redd, Mannarini, & Salvatore, ) and preference for political parties belonging to the traditional left–right political spectrum versus populist parties Mannarini, Rochira and colleagues (submitted). In sum, semiotic capital can be intended as the antagonist of the enemization of otherness – it enables a more articulated, multidimensional view of the reality, reducing the tendency to overcome the complexity of the globalized world through its assimilation to the foe/friend schema.…”

“…Veltri et al () showed that the 6 UK macroregions with a high proportion of leave votes at the Brexit referendum differed from the 6 macroregion with lower levels of leave by reason of a a specific profile of symbolic universes and underpinning lines of semiotic forces (cf. § 5).…”
