The Ideal of Facial Beauty: A Review

Abstract: In this review article we examine the question as to which parameters of facial attraction are amenable to measurement and which tools are available to perform these measurements. The evaluation of facial images, artistic standards, cephalometry, and anthropometry are discussed. Furthermore, we consider how the attractiveness of a face is influenced by symmetry, averageness and distinguishing features such as dental esthetics or gender specific characteristics.

“…These scores are then correlated with, for example, various angular or linear facial measurements or digital modifications. 2,3 This approach has been extensively used by Farkas 4 and other research groups, such as the Johnston team, 5 to tease out associations between attractiveness scores and anthropometrics, averageness, 6 symmetry, 7 and sexual dimorphism 8 of the human face. Despite the extensive number of facial beauty studies, research has been unable to define facial beauty with more specific parameters.…”
