“…But, it is recommended that all the COS items should be collected and reported, making it easier for the results to be compared, contrasted, and merged as appropriate. Indeed, similar international initiatives aiming at harmonizing outcome assessment are already existing such as for eczema (HOME for Harmonizing Outcome Measures for Eczema) (20) or, in the auditory field, for hearing loss (ICF for International Classification of Functioning, disability, and health core sets for hearing loss) (21). Then, we urge the tinnitus community to adopt and adapt these international standards of outcome definition and evaluation to the tinnitus field.…”

“…It postulates that an individual's level of functioning is not simply the consequence of an underlying health condition but instead should be thought of as a multifactorial concept that includes a person's body functions and structures, the activities they perform and the social situations they participate in. In addition, it recognizes that an individual's level of functioning is influenced by internal and external factors, which may affect functioning both positively and negatively (Granberg, Swanepoel, Englund, Möller, & Danermark, 2014). Others before us have used the general ICF framework in connection with hearing and communication (Anderson Gosselin & Gagné, 2011a;Danermark et al, 2010;Granberg, Dahlström, Möller, Kähäri, & Danermark, 2014;Granberg, Möller, Skagerstrand, Möller, & Danermark, 2014;Granberg, Swanepoel, Englund, Möller, & Danermark, 2014;Hickson & Scarinci, 2007;Saunders, Chisolm, & Abrams, 2005).…”

We will be using it to provide a framework to discuss the work we have done mainly within the ERA-NET funded HEARATTN project, whose goal was to understand age-related changes in communication ability and the consequences such changes have on health, wellbeing, and life satisfaction.…”

“…Previous attempts to standardise outcome measures in the hearing field have focused on the perspective of healthcare professionals. An excellent example is the World Health Organisation (WHO) International Classification of functioning, disability and health (ICF) core set for hearing loss . This classification is based on four components: body functions and structures, activities and participation, environmental factors and personal factors and was developed from an internet‐based survey of experts followed by a consensus meeting.…”
