This paper reports data from a study of young Catholic activists. They were concerned about the expansion of Islamist populism in democratic Muslim-majority Indonesia. They actively built inter-faith coalitions with local liberal Muslim youth groups and with pan-national Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest independent Islamic organisation in the world. Islamist populism prioritises religious identity over the national identity of citizenship. In framing their citizenship activism against the current tide of Islamist populism, the informants in our study selectively engaged aspects of Catholic theology. They articulated their religious identity as coterminous with a nationalist identity centred on multi-faith tolerance and harmony. That discourse in itself refutes a key principle of Islamist populism in Indonesia, which argues for primordial entitlement.

La multipolaridad del sistema internacional se ha visto reflejada por el surgimiento de nuevos poderes que buscan generar influencia y aspiran a cumplir un rol mucho más activo dentro del sistema internacional, socavando el dominio y posicionamiento de algunas potencias occidentales. Indonesia es un claro ejemplo debido a que desde su nacimiento pasó por diversos cambios, en donde experimentó varias crisis y tiempos prósperos que le ayudaron a crecer como Estado, y desde un inicio plantearse la idea de obtener un papel destacado a nivel mundial. En su proceso de poder consolidarse como potencia media ha implementado una clara estrategia diplomática, enfocada en demostrar su potencial, influencia y credibilidad frente a los demás. Esta estrategia hace alusión al Eje Marítimo Global, implementado por Joko Widodo, una visión marítima que ha destacado la posición geoestratégica de Indonesia, la cual la hace merecedora de grandes beneficios tanto económicos como comerciales. Además, ha incentivado el interés en participar activamente de los asuntos regionales haciéndole frente a diversos fenómenos, y la importancia de mantener buenas relaciones con sus vecinos y con las grandes potencias. Estos factores, sin lugar a duda, juegan un papel importante para reafirmar su rol e influencia dentro del sistema internacional. Sin embargo, existen dificultades de seguridad interna y externa que necesitan ser abordadas para que no se vuelvan un obstáculo dentro de su proceso de consolidación como potencia media (Pavez & Rosales, 2016).

The Paradigm of Proper Wage for Home Base Worker in Indonesian Labor System Based on Fair Wage Theory

The low appreciation and recognition for workers, particularly home base worker in the labor system in several regions of Indonesia has caused ignorance on their well-being. Their condition requires the attention from all parties including businesspeople, government (executive and legislative), and other social institutions. Without the support of other related parties, significant changes on the welfare of home base worker are impossible to take effect. There are several factors that cause the low welfare of home base worker in Indonesia, one of which is wages they receive, far lower from provincial, municipal, and sectoral proper wage standards. Fair wage is defined as equitable wage, in that equitable means consistent, impartial, and unbiased. Wage is closely related to worker’s proper life. Standardization of waging system is expected to relieve home base worker from job stress and maintain their socio-economic stability for sustainable development. This study uses sociolegal method, which discusses phenomena in the society, developed and institutionalized into legislations in a coherent rule of law. Using statute, conceptual, and case approach, the prescriptive analysis of this study uses fair wage theory as a guideline and parameter of proper wage for housemaids. In order to create welfare for home base worker in Indonesia, particularly regarding wage, regulations that govern minimum wage are required. For housemaids, wage is a source of income to be used for fulfilling their daily needs properly and equitably to create prosperous society according to Indonesian constitutional mandate based on the nation’s philosophy that had been stated as the foundation of the state, which is Pancasila.
