The kdr mutation occurs in the Mopti form of Anopheles gambiaes.s. through introgression

Abstract: Anopheles gambiae s.s. is a complex of sibling taxa characterized by various paracentric inversions. In west and central Africa, where several taxa are sympatric, a kdr mutation responsible for pyrethroid resistance has been described in only one (the S taxon), suggesting an absence of gene flow between them. Following a thorough sampling, we have found a kdr mutation in another taxon (M). To establish whether this mutation is the same event or not, the large intron upstream of the kdr mutation was sequenced t… Show more

“…17,19 However, in southern Benin, the kdr mutation was recently detected in the M population. 20,21 The low genetic diversity in the sodium channel introns of the resistant M and S mosquitoes suggests that a genetic sweep has occurred through an introgression from the S form. 21 On the basis of this resistance survey in 2000, resistance is absent in An.…”

“…The first report of L1014F in A. coluzzii came in 2000 from samples collected in southern Benin. Based on intron sequencing, L1014F was thought to have emerged in A. coluzzii via introgression from sympatric A. gambiae (12). A recent detailed genome sequencing study clearly described how the L1014F mutation and the entire 2L island of divergence has introgressed from A. gambiae into A. coluzzii in southern Ghana.…”

“…The knockdown resistance SNP, L1014F (11), in the para voltage-gated sodium channel gene (kdr) is located ∼2.4 Mbp from the 2L centromere and within the introgressed region identified by Lee et al (5). The L1014F SNP is thought to have arisen in West African A. gambiae populations (12) and confers target site resistance to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and pyrethroid insecticides (11,13). Recent and intense pyrethroid-based control programs are thought to have strongly selected for L1014F in A. gambiae (14,15).…”

“…In general, in West African countries, apart from Benin, the kdr resistance locus is at or near fixation in the S-form populations but occurs in the M form at very low levels, even in sympatry (della Torre et al 2001;Yawson et al 2004). Importantly, it has been proposed that the kdr mutation may have introgressed from the S form into the M form (Weill et al 2000), raising the possibility that there could be numerous adaptively and epidemiologically important genetic exchanges between forms.…”
