TheJ= 2 even-parity spectrum for high members of the Sr I 5snd1,3D2Rydberg series in the presence of electric fields and weak collisions

Abstract: An experimental study of the two-photon spectra of high members of the Sr I 5snd 1,3 D 2 Rydberg series is described. We use transverse excitation of an atomic beam with a narrow-bandwidth tuneable dye laser within a heat pipe equipped for field ionization detection. The presence of weak collisions has revealed several anomalies. Strong spin-orbit interaction and the breakdown of parity and selection rules combined with 'l' mixing are observed. The breakdown is due to the Stark field present in the interaction… Show more

“…The relative positions of these configurations are shown in figure 2. The energy levels of the 5snd 1 D 2 sequences and the perturbing terms have been accurately measured by several authors (Esherick 1977, Makdisi et al 2001. A high Rydberg state can be populated by either a direct two photon excitation through a virtual state halfway between the ground state and the upper energy level or by stepwise excitation via a real intermediate energy state.…”

“…Under weak collisions, the Stark field produces many other anomalies such as breakdown of parity and selection rules combined with l mixing and appearance of forbidden series. More details of these effects are discussed in our recent paper Makdisi et al (2001) on the J = 2 even parity spectrum for high members of the Sr I 5snd 1,3 D 2 Rydberg series in the presence of electric fields and weak collisions.…”

“…The schematic of the experimental setup shown in figure 1 is the same as that used for our previous work on the spectroscopic study of strontium by Makdisi et al (2001). The high Rydberg states of atoms in a heat pipe were populated by two-photon absorption of radiation from a tunable dye laser (Model LPD-3002) pumped by the Lambda Physik Excimer laser (Model LPX-210i).…”
