The FTF gene family regulates virulence and expression of SIX effectors in Fusarium oxysporum

Abstract: SUMMARYThe FTF (Fusarium transcription factor) gene family comprises a single copy gene, FTF2, which is present in all the filamentous ascomycetes analysed, and several copies of a close relative, FTF1, which is exclusive to Fusarium oxysporum. An RNAmediated gene silencing system was developed to target mRNA produced by all the FTF genes, and tested in two formae speciales: F. oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (whose host is common bean) and F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (whose host is tomato). Quantification of th… Show more

“…aTF7- and cTF7- overexpressing strains show a similar growth retardation and reduction of virulence, and aTf1 and cTf1 both are potent inducers of effector gene expression. In addition, a deletion mutant of cTF1 is less virulent, but can still colonize the plant [45,60]. The partial loss of virulence could be a result of redundancy between cTF1 and aTF1 .…”

“…24 , the FTF gene family was further investigated for all the sequenced Fo isolates from onion. A single orthogroup was found to contain all FTF genes previously described in Fo strains, fo47 and Fol-4287 25 as well as the BLAST homologs of FTF genes in Foc and Fo.…”

“…Nine transcription factors have been identified on Fol LS regions (TF1-9) 24 . Of these, TF1 ( FTF1 ), a Zn(II)2Cys6-type transcription factor is the best characterised, and regulates SIX gene expression in planta [24][25][26] . However, FTF1 contains a number of homologous genes within the Fol genome, including within core chromosomes 25 .…”
