TheArabidopsisFloral Homeotic Proteins APETALA3 and PISTILLATA Negatively Regulate theBANQUOGenes Implicated in Light Signaling

Abstract: The Arabidopsis thaliana MADS box transcription factors APETALA3 (AP3) and PISTILLATA (PI) heterodimerize and are required to specify petal identity, yet many details of how this regulatory process is effected are unclear. We have identified three related genes, BHLH136/BANQUO1 (BNQ1), BHLH134/BANQUO2 (BNQ2), and BHLH161/BANQUO3 (BNQ3), as being directly and negatively regulated by AP3 and PI in petals. BNQ1, BNQ2, and BNQ3 encode products belonging to a family of atypical non-DNA binding basic helix-loop-heli… Show more

“…For example, PRE1/BNQ1, PRE2/BNQ2, and PRE4/BNQ3 are direct target genes negatively regulated by AP3/PI in the petals and therefore play a role in floral development (Mara et al, 2010). The pre4/bnq3 mutant has decreased chlorophyll levels causing pale-white sepals and carpels (Mara et al, 2010). PRE3/ ATBS1/TMO7 was identified as target gene of MONOPTEROS/ ARF5 that is required for embryonic root development.…”

“…Many studies have demonstrated that the PRE family of HLH factors plays a key role in promoting cell elongation and plant growth downstream of many environmental and hormonal signals Hyun and Lee, 2006;Zhang et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2009;Mara et al, 2010;Schlereth et al, 2010). Several PRE family members have been shown to interact with and inhibit atypical bHLH factors, including IBH1 and AIFs (Hyun and Lee, 2006;Zhang et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2009).…”

“…AP3 and PI form heterodimers and appears to act together with other MADS box proteins viz. AP1 and SEPALLATA (SEP) to regulate development of floral organs (Mara et al 2010;Yi and Jack 1998). AP3-PI heterodimer bind to the promoter of AP3 and drives its expression through an auto-regulatory positive feedback loop (Mara et al 2010;Yi and Jack 1998).…”

Two transcripts of CsAP3 gene have been reported in saffron, namely, CsAP3a & CsAP3b, which differ in CCT trinucleotide repeats in 5′ and 3′ UTRs (Tsaftaris et al 2006).…”
