The Hydrostatic Level Method for Continuous Monitoring of Building Foundations

Abstract: It is important to control the deformation condition of building foundations, which can change throughout period of operation. One of the criteria for evaluation of deformation of foundations is the vertical differential settlement. The hydrostatic leveling system is a technique to measure differential vertical settlements of foundation. It is possible to provide many standard constructions with sufficient accuracy of measuring settlements by using technically simple variants of the hydrostatic leveling system… Show more

“…Hydrostatic Levelling System (HLS) 11 is already widely used in the field of settlement measurement such as monitoring of building foundation, 12 deformation monitoring of subway tunnels, 13 height measurement dam, 14 and high precision alignment of particle accelerator. 15 However, the traditional hydrostatic levelling system, developed according to the law of connected vessels, cannot completely overcome the inaccuracies caused by the curvature of earth, tide, evaporation of transmission liquid, et al 11,16 Additionally, the traditional hydrostatic levelling system needs to increase the size of sensor to meet the wide range measuring requirement for substructure settlement measurement of the highspeed railways among mountainous areas, which makes it inapplicable for the measurement of internal settlement of substructures.…”

“…To measure the inclination of individual building, we use the data obtained when recording the relative settlements of the characteristic points of its basement. We have developed an automated system of deformation monitoring of the individual building, based on the method of hydrostatic leveling [14]. The measurement of the difference in vertical displacements makes it possible to evaluate the inhomogeneous deformations of the basement, and also to observe the change in the position of the foundation as a rigid body.…”

“…A change in the vertical distance from this plane to various points of the object corresponds to an uplift and settlement of the structure elements. The hydrostatic leveling systems (HLS) are used not only for controlling the geophysical processes but also for monitoring various structures such as building foundations 6‐8 and tunnels 9‐11 . The number of sensors used and their location provide the necessary spatial resolution for recording the vertical displacement fields without the need to provide direct visibility between the elements of the system.…”
