The Hummocky Patches and Associated Sediment Dynamics Over an Accretional Intertidal Flat

Abstract: Tidal flat system is composed of multiple sub-scale geomorphological units. We found a new mesoscale geomorphological unit on sand-mud mixed intertidal zone along China coast, which was defined as hummocky patches. Hummock patches are most developed in middle tidal flat, with horizontal magnitude of 10–20 m and vertical magnitude of ∼15 cm. Hummocky patches significantly influence local sediment transport, thus affect morphological evolution of tidal flats. In order to understand the formation and development … Show more

“…The grain size of the surface sediment in the study area exhibited a seasonal variation pattern of coarse in summer and fine in winter. This phenomenon is consistent with in situ observations (Gong et al, 2017) and the results simulated by hydrodynamic models (Jia et al, 2006;Gong et al, 2017;Zhu et al, 2022). The seasonal variation of tidal flat particle size is highly correlated with the tidal range: (1) The tidal flat range in Jiangsu in summer is large, and the silt content in summer declined.…”

“…Furthermore, errors were also present in the middle of the difference. The red area indicated an error caused by the presence of a tidal channel, while the blue point-like area represented a newly identified mesoscale landform unit known as a hummocky patch, generated by erosion and typically exhibiting a height of 30-40 cm [56].…”
