The Human Impact of Floods: a Historical Review of Events 1980-2009 and Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Background. Floods are the most common natural disaster and the leading cause of natural disaster fatalities worldwide. Risk of catastrophic losses due to flooding is significant given deforestation and the increasing proximity of large populations to coastal areas, river basins and lakeshores. The objectives of this review were to describe the impact of flood events on human populations in terms of mortality, injury, and displacement and, to the extent possible, identify risk factors associated with these ou… Show more

“…Likewise, in certain hazard events such as tsunami where physiology plays a key role in survivorship, women, children aged<5 and older persons aged>70 years had a clear mortality disadvantage 104 . Mortality risk from flood events, on the other hand, is higher for males than for females 105,106 . Such demographic differential vulnerability needs to be taken into account in projections of climate change vulnerability and adaptive capacity.…”

“…The present work assessed the status of preparedness, disaster response and risk assessment in flood-affected Manila barangays during the "Mario" storm in September 2014, which is considered as one of the strongest typhoons to occur after Haiyan-Yolanda, the most destructive and strongest tropical storm in history [16]. Five representative shelter managing staff from Dona Imelda and Santa Lucia barangay DRR teams answered the interview questionnaire.…”

“…However in an area like Los Angeles that similar minor 77 flooding may be reported, which affects the frequencies of flooding in each area. Another source 78 of flood occurrence information is using a documentary source, which involves examining media 79 sources as well as government reports to comprise a set of occurrences across a state, country or 80 globe (Himmelsbach et al 2015 andDoocy et al 2013). These sources rely heavily on the 81 quality of the reporting, using the reports to assign severity and frequency estimates to cover an 82 expansive region.…”
