Radiation protection around CERN's high-energy accelerators represents a major challenge due to the presence of complex, mixed radiation fields. Behind thick shielding neutrons dominate and their energy ranges from fractions of eV to about 1 GeV. In this work the response of various portable detectors sensitive to neutrons was studied at CERN's High-Energy Reference Field Facility (CERF). The measurements were carried out with conventional rem counters, which usually cover neutron energies up to 20 MeV, the Thermo WENDI-2, which is specified to measure neutrons up to several GeV, and a tissue-equivalent proportional counter. The experimentally determined neutron dose equivalent results were compared with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Based on these studies field calibration factors can be determined, which result in a more reliable estimate of H Ã (10) in an unknown, but presumably similar high-energy field around an accelerator than a calibration factor determined in a radiation field of a reference neutron source.

The commercially available REM500 neutron survey meter is a microdosimetric instrument based on the use of a low-pressure tissue-equivalent proportional counter. The neutron spectrometry capability, as well as the dose equivalent response, of the REM500 was evaluated with five radioisotopic neutron sources ( and the mono-energetic 14-MeV neutrons. The response (counts/mSv) and sensitivity (counts/neutron) as a function of neutron energy were determined. From the measured pulse height spectra, the frequency-mean and dose-mean lineal energy values, as well as the mean quality factors, were derived for all sources. The neutron dose equivalent determined from the dose and mean quality factor measured by the REM500 agreed well with the reference values of ICRP21 maximum dose equivalent. However, for the REM500 to measure proper lineal spectra, the low sensitivity and inaccurate measurements for high-energy neutrons are areas that may need improvements.2

A comparison of two types of dose equivalent meters, a recombination chamber REM-2 and a tissue-equivalent proportional counter HANDI, were carried out at the CERN-EC high energy reference field facility, CERF, in October 2001. Here, the mixed high-energy radiation field in commercial flight altitudes can be simulated with dose equivalent rates up to 2 orders of magnitude higher. The total absorbed dose and the dose equivalent have been measured at different radiation field intensities. Of particular interest for measuring in the CERF field is the assessment of the low LET-component, i.e. the gamma and muon components of the field, which are not taken into account by existing Monte Carlo simulations modeling the radiation field. The new results for the estimation of the low LET-component are compared with previous ones delivered by REM-2 at CERF. The results show good agreement between the REM-2 chamber and the HANDI.
