Total organic carbon (ToC) content in lake sediments is typically used for the reconstruction of paleoenvironments. it remains uncertain, however, whether these sediment variables in lakes supplied by groundwater in the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert are applicable. Moreover, it is still uncertain whether the ToC content in these lakes can be used as a proxy to identify past climatic change and environmental evolution studies. in this study, the spatial distributions of the ToC contents and C/n ratios were analyzed for 109 surface sediment samples collected from five lakes without runoff recharge. The results revealed that the ToC content of the lake surface sediments was extremely low (0.03% -1.01%) and consisted of both allochthonous organic matter carried by wind, as well as autochthonous organic matter generated in the lakes. Within a lake, spatial differences in the amount of ToC found in surface sediments may be caused by several processes including bathymetry topography and wind-induced wave activity. in addition, wind-induced wave activity produces a higher ToC content, which is more pronounced in larger lakes (>0.21 km 2 ) with longer fetches. By contrast, in smaller lakes, organic matter accumulates in the deeper waters, but can be affected by many factors. it is therefore necessary to consider lake area when applying the ToC content of lake sediments for the reconstruction of a paleolake evolution. Furthermore, because the ToC content of lake sediments in hyper-arid regions is extremely low, and the organic matter may have multiple and varied sources, a single proxy (ToC) cannot be used to reconstruct lake evolution.

Vast palaeolakes once occupied the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (TP). Analyses of the sedimentary records of these lakes could potentially provide an extensive dating archive. Many previously constructed age‐depth models simulating lacustrine cores have been principally based on radiocarbon (14C) dating. However, such dating could have been hampered by the so‐called ‘lake reservoir effect’ (LRE) and the reworking of lakebed sediments, resulting in inaccurate 14C age‐depth models and limiting interpretations of existing lacustrine palaeoclimatic records. Lake Linggo Co is located on the central TP, in one of the coldest and most arid regions of Tibet. We dated a 9.87‐m‐long lacustrine core extracted from the lakebed at a water depth of ~60 m using a combination of 210Pb, 14C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. Some 14C ages showed significant age reversals; all the 14C ages were much older than the 210Pb and OSL ages for the same depths. This could possibly be attributed to the presence of old, inherited carbon, causing the inherited 14C age to appear unstable during the deposition period. The 210Pb and OSL ages were roughly concordant, and were also consistent with the stratigraphical succession. We therefore suggest that 14C dating may, on its own, be inadequate for accurate dating of lacustrine sediment sites on the TP, and that the OSL method should also be applied in order to evaluate the reliability of any 14C ages. With this approach, we constructed an age‐depth model, revealing sedimentation rates of 1.7, 0.8, 6.8 and 0.6 mm a−1 between 0–1.9, 1.9–4.2, 4.2–4.4 and 4.4–9.4 ka, respectively.

In the Avlamış Valley, 10 km north of Eskişehir (NW Anatolia), an undamaged triangular Levallois flake was encountered in a paleosol, 430 cm beneath the ground surface. The artifact has a minimal dorsal retouch on the right margin, and there is a light beige partial patina on the ventral surface. Based on the technological investigations, this artifact was made using the centripetal recurrent Levallois technique. An observation of the trench walls revealed the triple nature of the stratigraphy: an upper gravelly sand (Unit‐1), an underlying reddish‐brown pebbly paleosol (Unit‐2), and a lowermost dominantly pink, finer‐grained deposit (Unit‐3) where the artifact was retrieved. Optically stimulated luminescence ages indicate a strong influence of global marine isotopic stages (MIS) on the trench stratigraphy, with the deposit hosting the artifact dating to 148 ± 20 ka (MIS 6 cold period). The available pollen data from the same stratigraphic level verified an open steppe landscape with some arboreal plant cover during deposition. This is the first stratigraphically dated Middle Palaeolithic artifact from NW Anatolia, and one of the few in the whole country, thus igniting further discussion about the ways Pleistocene hominins adapted to cold and arid environmental conditions.
