The hold‐up problem in China's broiler industry: Empirical evidence from Jiangsu Province

Abstract: Using detailed survey data on broiler growers, we tested for the existence of holdup problems in the broiler industry in Jiangsu Province, China. We found that growers' investments in chicken houses, which are assets with a high degree of physical and location specificity, increased along with the number of potential buyers (integrators) nearby. “…The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture (2018) aims to reduce antibiotic use in animal farms through educating farmers on the rational use of veterinary antibiotics, reducing the use of growthpromoting antibiotics, and promoting the use of alternatives to antibiotics. Our research area is in Jiangsu Province in East China, where antibiotic pollution from poultry farming is severe (Wei et al, 2011;Chen et al, 2015;Guo et al, 2016) and contract farming is a predominant arrangement for rearing broilers (Tang et al, 2021). The local agricultural department encourages the poultry companies to motivate their contract farmers to reduce antibiotic use, serving as a pilot of national measures to reduce the use of antibiotics in agriculture (Jiangsu Provincial Commission of Agriculture, 2018).…”
