[1] We compare a number of radiative transfer models for atmospheric sounding in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength range, check their consistency, and investigate their deviations from each other. This intercomparison deals with three different aspects of radiative transfer models: (1) the inherent physics of gaseous absorption lines and how they are modeled, (2) the calculation of absorption coefficients, and (3) the full calculation of radiative transfer for different geometries, i.e., up-looking, down-looking, and limblooking. The correctness and consistency of the implementations are tested by comparing calculations with predefined input such as spectroscopic data, line shape, continuum absorption model, and frequency grid. The absorption coefficients and brightness temperatures calculated by the different models are generally within about 1% of each other. Furthermore, the variability or uncertainty of the model results is estimated if (except for the atmospheric scenario) the input such as spectroscopic data, line shape, and continuum absorption model could be chosen freely. Here the models deviate from each other by about 10% around the center of major absorption lines. The main cause of such discrepancies is the variability of reported spectroscopic data for line absorption and of the continuum absorption model. Further possible causes of discrepancies are different frequency and pressure grids and differences in the corresponding interpolation routines, as well as differences in the line shape functions used, namely a prefactor of (n/n 0 ) or (n/n 0 ) 2 of the Van-Vleck-Weisskopf line shape function. The effects of spectral radiation absorption on the flame speed at normal and elevated pressures were experimentally and numerically investigated using the CO 2 diluted outwardly propagating CH 4 -O 2 -He flames. Experimentally, the laminar burning velocities of CH 4 -O 2 -He-CO 2 mixtures at both normal and elevated pressures (up to 5 atm) were measured by using a pressure-release type spherical bomb. The results showed that radiation absorption with CO 2 addition increases the flame speed and extends the flammability limit. In addition, it was also shown that the increase of pressure augments the effect of radiation absorption. Computationally, a fitted statistical narrow-band correlated-k (FSNB-CK) model was developed and validated for accurate radiation prediction in spherical geometry. This new radiation scheme was integrated to the compressible flow solver developed to simulate outwardly propagating spherical flames. The comparison between experiment and computation showed a very good agreement. The results showed that the flame geometry have a significant impact on radiation absorption and that the one-dimensional planar radiation model was not valid for the computation of the flame speed of a spherical flame. An effective Boltzmann number is extracted from numerical simulation. Furthermore, the FSNB-CK model was compared with the grey band SNB model. It was shown that the grey band SNB model over-predicts the radiation absorption. It is concluded that quantitative prediction of flame speed and flammability limit of CO 2 diluted flame requires accurate spectral dependent radiation model.

Spectroscopic measurements on ethylene were performed using a quasi-room-temperature quantum cascade (QC) laser operated in pulsed mode in the 10.3 mm range. Using transmission spectroscopy, a broadening of the ethylene absorption spectrum was observed with increasing laser pulse duration, due to an increase of the laser linewidth. This linewidth was determined from the measured absorption spectra, showing a value of 0.04 cm − 1 for a 20 ns pulse duration and an enhancement coefficient of 6.5 × 10 − 3 cm − 1 per ns in the 20 -50 ns pulse length range. Photoacoustic (PA) detection of ethylene was also performed using the QC laser and a resonant PA cell, with a detection limit of 60 ppm.
