The history of the muon (g-2) experiments

Abstract: I discuss the history of the muon (g − 2) measurements, beginning with the Columbia-Nevis measurement that observed parity violation in muon decay, and also measured the muon g-factor for the first time, finding g µ = 2. The theoretical (Standard Model) value contains contributions from quantum electrodynamics, the strong interaction through hadronic vacuum polarization and hadronic light-by-light loops, as well as the electroweak contributions from the W , Z and Higgs bosons. The subsequent experiments, first… Show more

“…Ultralight DM may generate a frequency modulation or a frequency shift in the total count, as in Eqns. (25) and (29). We may describe both cases as a DM-induced frequency modulation of amplitude δω and frequency m in the oscillation of the momentum-component of spin S y .…”

“…ω C is much faster than the frequency ω sm at which S itself rotates, and so generically both of these components ω C ±m dm are very rapid, which further suppressed the signal, as in Eqn. (25). This suppression is removed in a narrow frequency interval around m dm ≈ ω C in which case one of the components is nearly static.…”

“…Since then, there have been a number of muon g − 2 experiments, each improving on the last. Lee Roberts succinctly summarized the fascinating history of these experiments in his article The History of Muon (g − 2) Experiments [33]. Here the focus will be on the most recently completed experiment, The Brookhaven Muon g − 2 Experiment, or E821 [34].…”
