The History of Myringotomy and Grommets

Abstract: The first recorded myringotomy was in 1649. Astley Cooper presented 2 papers to the Royal Society in 1801, based on his observations that myringotomy could improve hearing. Widespread inappropriate use of the procedure followed, with no benefit to patients; this led to it falling from favor for many decades. Hermann Schwartze reintroduced myringotomy later in the 19th century. It had been realized earlier that the tympanic membrane heals spontaneously, and much experimentation took place in attempting to keep … Show more

“…First, a slight incision of tympanic membrane is performed, followed by proper placement of the ventilation tube. This procedure enables the pressure between the ear canal and the middle ear to equalize ( 14 ). The ventilation tubes usually remain at the insertion site between 6 and 12 months, but in a large number of cases, they can fall out spontaneously, which means no re-operative removal is required ( 15 ).…”

“…In cases of serous otitis media where it is challenging to drain fluid via an incision in the anteroinferior quadrant, the incision at the anterosuperior quadrant is preferred. These tubes were first used in the late 1800s and were remade using plastic in 1954 by Beverley Armstrong [6]. After that, many advances have been made in the materials used for composition and designs.…”

“…I read the article ''The History of Myringotomy and Grommets'' with great interest. 1 It was the philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche who said that we are all doomed to perpetuate the lies and myths of history. Are we also condemned to perpetuate the inaccuracies that we have already read about in the history of otolaryngology?…”
